This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Virginia, +1 more state.
• Conducting recreational surveys on lands adjacent to national marine sanctuary waters in a courteous and respectful manner.
• Regularly checking the schedule on Google Drive, both weekly and daily, and planning survey site drive times and locations using GPS and maps.
• Properly setting up interview sites (e.g., sign placement, traffic cone placement, etc.) to ensure the safety of oneself and visitors.
• Placing and calibrating trail cameras to monitor usage on designated trail and road systems.
• Downloading data from tablets and reporting status updates to the field supervisor.
• Maintaining and organizing surveys and daily counts in a neat and orderly manner.
• Compiling weekly reports for the field supervisor regarding site usage levels, recreational use, and weather conditions at each assigned survey location.
• Complying with strict WVU data collection policies and guidelines, including appropriate dress and the display of safety signage, among others.
• Capable of driving long distances across various road surfaces during early morning and evening hours.
• Able to work independently without direct supervision from field management at all times.
• High school diploma or GED.
• A minimum of six months of prior in-field data collection experience on state, federal, or municipal lands is preferred, though not required.
• Any equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience will be considered.
• All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.
• Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Competency in both written and oral communication.
• Ability to drive on various types of roads to reach remote locations.
• Skill in maintaining neat and concise notes and surveys.
• Ability to meet deadlines consistently.
• Maintain a professional demeanor and appearance at all times.
• Proficient in effective communication.
• Skilled in strategic planning and logistics.
• Competent in critical thinking, including the use of logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of different solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
