
Tamper Operator – Railway Maintenance

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Operate rail-mounted tamper machines to align, level, and compact track ballast beneath railway ties.
• Adhere to track maintenance schedules and procedures as directed by the Track Supervisor.
• Adjust and calibrate tamping machinery to accommodate specific rail conditions and tolerances.
• Read and interpret track diagrams, work orders, and machine settings accurately.
• Conduct routine pre-operation inspections of tamping machines.
• Perform basic maintenance and troubleshoot tamper equipment as necessary.
• Collaborate effectively with maintenance-of-way personnel, surfacing crews, welders, and track inspectors.
• Report unsafe conditions, track defects, and equipment malfunctions promptly.
• Maintain precise daily logs and production records.
• High school diploma or GED is preferred.
• A minimum of 1–2 years of experience in railroad maintenance or operating rail-bound machinery.
• A valid driver’s license; CDL may be necessary based on jurisdiction.
• Certification for railway equipment operation, such as FRA-compliant training or company-specific certification.
• Strong understanding of track geometry and alignment principles.
• Mechanical aptitude with the ability to perform minor repairs.
• Knowledge of railway safety protocols, including track protection and flagging procedures.
• Ability to work autonomously as well as part of a maintenance crew.
• Effective communication and problem-solving abilities.
• Familiarity with railway maintenance practices and safety standards, including AREMA and FRA regulations.
• Willingness to travel extensively along rail corridors and work in remote locations.
• Capability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and near moving trains and heavy equipment.
• Availability for night shifts, weekends, and extended hours during track outages or scheduled maintenance windows.
• Ability to sit, stand, and operate equipment for prolonged periods.
• Capability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to safely climb on and off rail equipment.
• Good vision, hearing, and hand-eye coordination.
