Systems Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Texas.

📋 Description

• Oversee the uptime and overall health of the kiosk fleet, aiming to eliminate patterns that lead to repeated failures.

• Diagnose hardware issues in the yard — including edge computing devices, cameras, ID readers, displays, networking equipment, power sources, and enclosures — both remotely when feasible and on-site as necessary.

• Contribute to future revisions of kiosk hardware, focusing on component and layout modifications, as well as assessing the implications for enclosure design and access control, along with power resilience through UPS sizing and failover strategies.

• Manage factory acceptance testing with hardware manufacturers and oversee site acceptance testing for new site launches.

• Develop site-specific solutions that integrate the access-control platform with customer-managed security and video management systems.

• Create configuration utilities and automation processes to streamline the transition of a kiosk from shipping crate to operational status without requiring a specialist.

• Maintain comprehensive documentation for kiosks, detailing interconnects, networking setups, power configurations, accessories, and on-call runbooks.

• Engage in an on-call rotation and enhance monitoring and alerting systems for field hardware.

• Report directly to Michael Sewell, Senior System Engineer.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 3 years experience in systems engineering, field engineering, edge infrastructure, IT infrastructure, or a comparable hands-on role that supports production hardware in the field.

• Practical experience with Ubuntu or other Linux-based systems, including remote access, log analysis, and command-line troubleshooting.

• Proven track record in troubleshooting across hardware, firmware, operating systems, networks, and applications, with a focus on identifying root causes instead of simply replacing parts until a solution is found.

• Familiarity with Ethernet networking, IP addressing, switching, VLANs, VPNs, and cellular connectivity.

• Solid understanding of PoE, power supplies, power distribution, UPS systems, and strategies for recovering from power interruptions and brownouts.

• Experience managing fleets of remote, unattended, or distributed systems, including remote monitoring, alerting, and recovery processes.

• Background in working with IP cameras and access control hardware, including installation, configuration, aiming, and calibration.

• Proficiency in scripting to automate configuration and provisioning tasks (e.g., Python, Bash, or similar languages).

• Experience in creating and maintaining technical documentation, such as interconnect and wiring diagrams, network and power documentation, installation standards, and operational runbooks.

• Willingness to travel to various sites for launches, installations, escalations, and participate in an on-call rotation.

• Strong communication skills, capable of collaborating with both technical and non-technical teams, including Field Operations and customer IT and security personnel.

• Experience with factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, or commissioning new installations is advantageous.

• Familiarity with integrating customer-operated video management or security systems (e.g., Genetec, Milestone, Avigilon, Verkada, or similar) is a plus.

• Experience with NVIDIA Jetson, industrial PCs, single-board computers, or other edge computing platforms is beneficial.

• Knowledge of remote access and networking equipment such as Tailscale, Teltonika, Ubiquiti, or similar is a plus.

• Familiarity with kiosks, machine vision, industrial automation, or IoT systems is advantageous.

• Experience with equipment used outdoors or in semi-controlled environments, including considerations for enclosures, mounting, and thermal management is a plus.

• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
