This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.
• Create engineering design drawings and calculation packages from the conceptual phase through detailed design, and conduct design reviews of the civil/structural components to support the development of bid/construction packages for substation projects.
• Ensure compliance of the substation facility with all relevant safety and environmental regulations, including storm water management and Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) requirements.
• Carry out site design activities, such as assessing cut/fill for grading plans, determining impervious additions, and calculating water flow for erosion and storm water control.
• Regularly conduct design reviews while also mentoring junior staff and contributing to the development of bids and proposals.
• Occasional site visits to client substation facilities will be required, along with travel for client meetings and industry-related events.
• Offer design support to field personnel during the construction phase of projects.
• A Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering.
• Over 5 years of experience in electric utility substation design engineering and reviews.
• A PE License in the State of California.
• A solid foundation in designing steel structures, concrete structures, site grading, geotechnical engineering, foundations, and substation access roads, along with familiarity with relevant codes and standards.
• Experience in designing and reviewing civil and structural designs for substations in seismic areas, encompassing both new and existing structures, including transmission dead ends, rigid and strain bus systems, foundations, oil spill containment, retaining walls, masonry control shelters, pre-engineered and prefabricated buildings, and firewalls.
• Knowledge of surveying, geotechnical aspects, and construction specifications, including development and review processes.
• Adherence to quality control and safety practices while maintaining compliance with project scope, schedule, and budget expectations.
• Proficient with STAAD.Pro, RISA 3D, FAD Tools, SAFE, SAG10, and LPile software.
• Familiar with AutoCAD Civil 3D and MicroStation, as well as working with georeferenced drawings.
• Strong analytical and technical writing skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word/Excel/PowerPoint).
• Experience in client-facing operations such as lunch and learns, and kick-off meetings.
