Studio Director

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Act as a custodian of the Principals' vision for the Space Program, safeguarding its mission, culture, scale, and artistic integrity.

• Steer the creative direction and maintain high standards for residency experiences, exhibitions, and programming.

• Oversee daily operations, capacity management, annual objectives, implementation, and uphold the organization's reputation.

• Manage the recruitment, selection, onboarding, scheduling, support for resident artists, and the residency calendar.

• Collaborate with resident artists to develop creative projects from inception to execution.

• Supervise residencies, exhibitions, artist discussions, workshops, open studios, and community engagement programs.

• Ensure that studios, workshops, equipment, and communal creative spaces are secure and operational.

• Organize schedules, studio assignments, vendor coordination, logistics, facility use, project resources, and approved budgets.

• Cultivate relationships throughout the Bay Area arts community and act as the primary representative to artists, galleries, collectors, alumni, and cultural partners.

• Mentor resident artists and create an inviting, collaborative residency atmosphere.

• Conduct tours of the residency and build partnerships that align with the mission for Principal endorsement.

• Lead the Studio Manager & Print Technician, coordinating workloads, production timelines, and operational priorities.

• Engage in recruitment, onboarding, performance evaluations, staffing, and succession planning.

• Keep operational documentation, contracts, inventories, and program records up to date.

• Prepare operational updates, planning documents, and recommendations for the Principals.

• Assess processes and suggest enhancements while upholding the organization's distinctive culture.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven leadership experience in creative, cultural, educational, residency, museum, gallery, or mission-oriented organizations.

• Acknowledged artistic background with the ability to mentor, collaborate with, and provide guidance to artists across various disciplines.

• Track record of successfully developing and executing intricate creative projects, exhibitions, residencies, educational initiatives, or community programs.

• Outstanding relationship-building and communication skills with artists, alumni, collectors, galleries, donors, community organizations, and cultural partners.

• Strong organizational and project management abilities for managing multiple concurrent priorities.

• Experience in managing program resources effectively while balancing creative opportunities with organizational capacity.

• Capability to lead through influence, encourage collaboration, build consensus, and ensure accountability for organizational outcomes.

• Leadership approach rooted in creative excellence, operational rigor, thoughtful stewardship, and exceptional experiences for artists.
