Staff Software Engineer, Voice AI Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, deploy, and sustain highly resilient and scalable backend services, applications, and core platform components that support Toast's Voice AI platform.

• Lead intricate, cross-functional projects from conception to production, taking ownership of outcomes and fostering stakeholder alignment.

• Influence technical direction through architectural choices, established patterns, and the simplification of complexities.

• Create and enhance integrations between AI platforms and internal Toast systems.

• Implement observability, monitoring, and evaluation frameworks for AI-driven systems, utilizing production data to enhance system functionality.

• Establish engineering quality standards and best practices through patterns and documented guidelines.

• Guide engineers at various levels through code reviews, design critiques, and technical mentorship.

• Work in partnership with product teams, engineering, and stakeholders to transform ambiguous challenges into dependable, scalable solutions.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of experience with object-oriented programming languages such as Java or Kotlin.

• A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline.

• Proven experience in developing products or features integrated with AI, including systems that incorporate LLMs or other AI functionalities.

• Experience in constructing and analyzing AI-powered systems, addressing challenges like nondeterminism, evaluation strategies, observability, and cost management.

• Demonstrated history of delivering complex, mission-critical production services and maintaining ownership over the long term.

• Proven track record of leading multi-person and multi-team projects from design to rollout.

• Profound understanding of distributed systems, scalability, and production reliability.

• Basic knowledge of frontend development.

• Excellent cross-team communication and collaboration abilities; capacity to influence direction without formal authority.

• Active use of AI coding tools like Claude Code or Cursor, with experience in helping others enhance their proficiency with these tools.

• Familiarity with voice or conversational AI platforms is advantageous, but not mandatory.

• Experience with backend services utilizing Kotlin, Java, DropWizard, AWS, DynamoDB, RDS, Lambda, and sharded Postgres; knowledge of React and ES6 is a plus.
