Staff Software Engineer, React Native

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Take charge of technical direction: Define and advance the technical standards, architecture, and best practices for your team’s mobile features, ensuring the app's long-term scalability and maintainability.

• Tackle the most challenging problems: Lead the design and execution of the team’s most intricate and expansive projects, requiring profound technical judgment and cross-system collaboration.

• Enhance team efficiency: Recognize and implement enhancements to developer tools, build pipelines, and development workflows that empower the entire team to innovate faster and deliver with greater assurance.

• Establish engineering protocols: Set and uphold standards for component architecture, testing, accessibility, performance, and mobile deployment within the team.

• Mentor all engineers: Offer guidance to engineers at every level within the team, nurturing technical growth, elevating quality standards, and promoting a culture of continuous improvement.

• Collaborate at the organizational level: Partner with Engineering Managers, Product leadership, and other Staff/Principal engineers to align technical strategy with business goals.

• Manage cross-stack integration: Ensure the mobile app effectively integrates with backend services (Go and Rails), promoting consistency in API contracts and data flows across the platform.

• Engage in on-call rotation: Take responsibility for systemic reliability enhancements and lead incident responses for critical production issues.

⛳️ Requirements

• 8–10 years of professional software engineering experience, with extensive expertise in developing production React Native applications at scale.

• Proven history of managing multiple complex technical projects and successfully delivering outcomes across a team.

• Comprehensive experience with the entire mobile development lifecycle at scale — architecture, build systems, deployment pipelines, and post-release monitoring.

• Experience in building mobile applications supported by large-scale, high-throughput distributed systems serving millions of users.

• A background in enhancing engineering teams through mentorship, standard-setting, and technical leadership.

• Mastery-level proficiency in TypeScript — recognized as a reference point for TypeScript best practices, patterns, and type system utilization.

• Deep expertise in React Native — adept at resolving challenging issues related to performance, native modules, complex animations, and cross-platform consistency.

• Expert experience with Expo and its ecosystem, monorepo tooling (Yarn workspaces), and mobile build/release infrastructure.

• Strong understanding of mobile testing strategies at scale — proficient in Jest, Maestro for E2E testing, and quality automation.

• Proficient in CI/CD for mobile and Expo/EAS workflows — including automated builds, OTA updates, staged rollouts, and app store pipelines.

• Understanding of backend API patterns — able to read, analyze, and influence API design across Go and Rails services.

• Operates with complete autonomy — defines personal and team work priorities based on what is most significant.

• Exceptional communicator capable of articulating technical strategy to engineering leadership and non-technical stakeholders.

• Experienced in fully remote engineering organizations.

• Comfortable making high-stakes technical decisions with incomplete information.
