Staff Software Engineer – Platform and Cloud Services

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of canonical data models and service boundaries within the designated domain.

• Manage the architecture for vital platform domains, ensuring design integrity, scalability, reliability, security, and long-term technical viability.

• Create AWS-native, event-driven, asynchronous, cloud-native services.

• Architect backend systems that support AI/ML workloads at scale.

• Develop tenant isolation, authentication, authorization, secure token management, and permission-aware data access.

• Collaborate with product and engineering leaders to translate business requirements into platform architectures.

• Lead significant platform initiatives from inception to completion and promote cross-functional technical alignment.

• Generate design documents, service contracts, and acceptance criteria.

• Design versioned, high-scale API contracts that include idempotency, structured error handling, and defined limits.

• Oversee initiatives from design to release while maintaining standards for reliability, security, observability, performance, scalability, usability, and cost.

• Advocate for infrastructure-as-code, automated testing, continuous delivery, and observability practices.

• Spearhead platform modernization and refactoring efforts.

• Contribute across the technology stack as necessary, with a primary focus on backend development.

• Remove obstacles for teams, expedite architectural decisions, and minimize long-term complexity.

• Collaborate with CloudOps, Security, MLOps, and integration teams.

• Mentor senior and mid-level engineers.

• Promote the practical adoption of beneficial AI capabilities.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's and/or master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software or Electrical/Electronics Engineering, or a related field.

• Over 8 years of professional software engineering experience, including a minimum of 2 years at the staff level.

• Proven leadership in making architecture decisions that span multiple teams.

• Ability to influence technical outcomes across a diverse range of stakeholders and teams without direct authority.

• Established record of owning substantial initiatives from start to finish, including release management.

• Strong expertise in Python; experience in Java is an advantage.

• Extensive experience in designing, building, and operating scalable, enterprise-level distributed systems on AWS.

• Solid skills in data modeling and service architecture.

• Familiarity with high-throughput data pipelines, asynchronous processing, or ML/inference services at scale and in a cost-effective manner.

• Robust understanding of application security and multi-tenancy, including aspects such as authentication/authorization, token management, tenant isolation, and permission-aware data access.

• Experience in designing high-scale API contracts.

• Strong background in infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD practices for cloud services.

• Comprehensive understanding of observability in distributed systems, including logging, metrics, tracing, and alerting.

• Demonstrated commitment to staying updated with rapidly evolving AI capabilities and integrating them into work and design.

• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English.
