Staff Software Engineer – Platform, Access & Authorization

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the complete design, implementation, and management of functionalities related to authentication, OAuth, sessions, tokens, two-factor authentication (2FA), account recovery, and edge authorization.

• Develop secure, low-latency Go and gRPC services for Coinbase's web, mobile, API, and partner experiences, incorporating observability, failure testing, and measurable service level objectives (SLOs).

• Lead the technical design for signed authorization tokens, passkeys, biometric recovery, device-aware authentication, and mobile OAuth solutions.

• Collaborate with product, security, fraud, and infrastructure teams to effectively balance customer conversion, account protection, regulatory obligations, and engineering limitations.

• Streamline integration patterns and create self-service tools to promote the safe and scalable adoption of access and authorization functionalities.

• Mentor engineers and elevate technical standards through design reviews, collaborative work, code assessments, and on-call engagement.

⛳️ Requirements

• Minimum of 8 years of experience in backend software engineering.

• Strong expertise in Go or a similar systems-oriented programming language.

• Proven experience in building and maintaining reliable, high-throughput distributed production services.

• Familiarity with designing secure APIs and understanding authentication, authorization, session management, trust boundaries, and token management.

• Knowledge of standards such as OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, JWTs, PKCE, or related technologies.

• Proficient in gRPC and Protocol Buffers.

• Experience with data storage solutions like Redis or DynamoDB.

• Strong operational skills utilizing metrics, logs, traces, alerts, and SLOs.

• Demonstrated ability to deliver complex cross-functional projects from technical design to production deployment.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Responsible utilization of generative AI with human oversight and measurable improvements in workflows.
