Staff Software Engineer, Essentials

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Develop and enhance high-efficiency workflows for intricate mathematical and statistical computations across datasets containing hundreds of thousands of records.

• Take ownership of performance considerations involving Postgres query plans and indexing, batching and parallelism, memory behavior, Redis caching, and algorithmic enhancements.

• Ensure that performance enhancements maintain the correctness of outputs.

• Design and manage reliable systems for messaging, queueing, workflow orchestration, job scheduling, retries, idempotency, and backpressure.

• Plan for partial failures in lengthy multi-stage pipelines.

• Create observability tools for diagnosing slow or incorrect executions, including timing, lineage, and intermediate state.

• Develop tools for data validation and remediation, analysis setup, exception handling, report generation, and other Essentials workflows.

• Design agent harnesses incorporating evaluation sets, verification steps, constrained tool surfaces, and points for human review.

• Equip agents with up-to-date documentation, schemas, conventions, and project status.

• Enhance agentic development practices and disseminate them among the team.

• Establish benchmarks for testing, performance, and agentic practices in collaboration with engineering leadership.

• Increase integration and end-to-end test coverage.

• Mentor engineers through design reviews, collaborative work, and code evaluations.

• Propel performance, scalability, reliability, and agent uptake for Syndio's pay equity product, Essentials.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of professional, hands-on experience.

• Extensive experience with complex, distributed, service-oriented systems.

• Demonstrated success in performance and scalability projects.

• Experience with large-scale dataset computations, numerical or statistical workloads, or extensive data pipelines.

• Familiarity with messaging systems, queues, or workflow orchestration tools.

• Strong proficiency in several programming languages including Python, Go, Node/JavaScript, TypeScript, React, Postgres, and NoSQL databases such as Firebase.

• Knowledge of caching layers like Redis.

• Solid experience in end-to-end and integration testing of service-driven architectures.

• Hands-on experience with an end-to-end framework such as Playwright or Cypress.

• Daily engagement with coding agents and experience in creating reliable agentic development harnesses.

• Strong CI/CD practices and workflows from specifications to code.

• High degree of autonomy in tackling ambiguous, high-stakes challenges to deliver results.

• Ability to collaborate across teams and translate technical limitations into business terms.

• Capacity to establish and adhere to engineering best practices.

• Must reside in Calgary.

• Must possess legal authorization to work in Alberta without the need for additional visa support now or in the future.
