Staff Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and improve Java/Spring and React applications that facilitate scientific workflows for variant identification, curation, ranking, and clinical reporting.

• Create and manage data models, APIs, and search/query strategies that enable fast, precise filtering, faceting, and retrieval of large-scale genomic variant data.

• Collaborate directly with scientific and clinical subject matter experts to interpret complex domain requirements into clear and well-defined technical designs.

• Lead the design and development of scalable, maintainable, and secure solutions while ensuring alignment on technical direction across teams through design documentation and architecture reviews.

• Diagnose complex production issues across the technology stack, identify root causes, and significantly enhance system reliability, observability, and performance.

• Utilize AI-assisted development tools effectively and responsibly to expedite delivery, and assist the team in establishing best practices for their usage.

• Promote best practices in software engineering, ensuring high code quality, automated testing, and CI/CD processes.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

• Over 8 years of experience in software engineering, particularly in full-stack application development.

• Demonstrated leadership capabilities, with a track record of leading by example and mentoring fellow engineers.

• Strong proficiency in cloud-based solutions and experience in integrating third-party software into existing systems.

• Extensive experience in constructing service-oriented architectures and designing RESTful API services to support scalable and maintainable applications.

• Exceptional problem-solving abilities, with the capacity to troubleshoot and resolve technical challenges efficiently.

• Strong communication skills, able to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders effectively.

• Familiarity with search and query technologies such as OpenSearch or Elasticsearch, including index and mapping design, query performance optimization, and faceted filtering over large datasets.

• Proficient in Java / Spring and React frameworks.

• Experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL technologies (OpenSearch/Elasticsearch, MongoDB, DynamoDB).
