Staff Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States, +1 more country.

📋 Description

• Take charge of Shopify's checkout and post-purchase functionalities, encompassing checkout, thank-you pages, customer accounts, and post-purchase interfaces.

• Develop and sustain Shopify extensions and server-side code that governs the offers displayed.

• Operate within Shopify's runtime limitations, which include bundle size, sandboxed APIs, and rigorous review processes.

• Redesign experimentation reporting for Smart Flows and A/B Testing initiatives.

• Create data models, PHP and TypeScript endpoints, as well as BigQuery/MySQL queries.

• Construct secure and well-organized REST APIs in PHP and TypeScript for extensions, administrative tasks, and Shopify integrations.

• Utilize GraphQL for communication with Shopify.

• Investigate production issues reported by merchants and determine the root causes.

• Enhance logging and metrics and engage in a rotating on-call schedule.

• Leverage Anthropic Claude Code throughout development, review, and testing phases.

• Conduct unit, end-to-end, manual, and actual Shopify store testing without needing a separate QA handoff.

• Review code and partake in technical decision-making beyond immediate responsibilities.

• Lead by example and manage ad hoc requests through the Product Manager for prioritization.

• Collaborate closely with the Product Manager and engineering colleagues in a small, highly autonomous team.

⛳️ Requirements

• Staff-level ownership with minimal specifications and the capability to lead technical decisions or migrations end-to-end across various systems or teams.

• Proficient daily use of AI coding tools and the judgment to assess their outputs.

• Strong problem-solving abilities in unfamiliar codebases using TypeScript or PHP.

• Over 8 years of experience in developing production web applications.

• Practical experience in deploying and maintaining PHP (CodeIgniter 4 or a similar MVC framework) and TypeScript with React.

• Experience managing a revenue-critical, customer-facing production system, which includes logs, metrics, escalations, and incident resolutions.

• Hands-on experience with BigQuery on Google Cloud or another columnar data warehouse, including analytical queries and cost awareness.

• Proficient in MySQL schema design and migrations.

• Strong testing discipline across unit and end-to-end testing suites, including self-directed quality assurance.

• Understanding of secure coding practices for buyer and order data, including the OWASP Top 10.

• Proven track record with orchestration and platform-wide, componentized systems.

• Well-suited for a remote-first, highly autonomous culture and responsive on Slack during working hours.

• Educational background in Computer Science/Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience.

• Preferred: Experience in Shopify app development, particularly in Checkout Extensibility, post-purchase extensions, or Admin and Storefront GraphQL APIs.

• Preferred: Familiarity with tightly constrained runtimes such as React Native.

• Preferred: Experience with Preact.

• Preferred: Comfort with Kanban and Sprint-based workflows.
