This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States, +1 more state.
• Design and develop web applications utilizing Ruby on Rails, Sinatra/Padrino, and Django that align with CodePath’s mission.
• Make significant technical decisions regarding infrastructure, data modeling, API design, and emerging technologies, while managing trade-offs.
• Establish high standards for code quality through reviews, architectural guidance, and constructive feedback.
• Create automated tests that capture real-world edge cases.
• Detect performance bottlenecks and systemic issues before they escalate into outages.
• Mentor fellow engineers and elevate the technical capabilities of the team.
• Lead efforts in architecture, product direction, team capacity, and the long-term technical roadmap.
• Collaborate directly with stakeholders to understand the needs of students and staff, determine what should be developed, and oversee execution.
• Develop new Rails functionalities and tools tailored for users and diverse learner populations.
• Innovate platform components while transitioning from Sinatra to Rails.
• Incorporate AI/ML technologies into the platform for mastery-driven, adaptive learning experiences.
• Scale the system to support hundreds of thousands of students, expanding from a base of tens of thousands.
• Over 10 years of experience in software engineering, with a minimum of 5 years focused on Ruby on Rails.
• Familiarity with Claude Code or similar development tools and associated best practices.
• A systems-thinking approach, considering factors such as scalability, maintainability, and failure modes.
• Proficient in PostgreSQL and database design, including complex queries, indexing strategies, and schema evolution.
• Working knowledge of the complete web stack, from infrastructure through to CSS.
• Proven ability to guide technical decisions within a small, self-sufficient team environment.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to convey technical trade-offs to non-engineers.
• A strong passion for education and a commitment to making a positive impact.
• Familiarity with the higher education sector or edtech environments.
• Hands-on experience with LLMs and generative AI in production settings.
• Knowledge of Docker, Ansible, and/or Terraform.
• Experience with deployments on GCP.
