Staff Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Lead essential or high-stakes projects that span multiple teams and interconnected systems.

• Define challenges, clarify ownership and dependencies, articulate trade-offs, and drive the adoption of production solutions.

• Take responsibility for the architecture of a product area and establish scalable boundaries across frontend, APIs, data, and production systems.

• Conduct design reviews and set standards within your area of influence.

• Write and evaluate code, prototype, debug, oversee migrations, and manage services in production.

• Recognize opportunities where models, agents, retrieval, or automation add value and develop reusable capabilities with measurable outcomes and guardrails.

• Enhance testing, performance, observability, security, and operational readiness.

• Anticipate systemic risks, address technical debt, and contribute to resolution and learning during critical production challenges.

• Mentor mid- and senior-level engineers across various teams, promoting systems thinking and design patterns.

• Collaborate with product, design, and engineering leaders to shape roadmaps for product areas and align dependencies.

• Link technical investments to reader, editorial, and business results.

• Drive multi-quarter projects from problem framing to production adoption.

• Establish safe and repeatable AI practices where they provide value and enhance system reliability, scalability, security, observability, and adaptability.

⛳️ Requirements

• Generally 7+ years of experience in professional software development, or equivalent sustained impact at the Staff level, including leading complex initiatives across various teams or systems.

• Practical experience using agentic coding tools like Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or similar tools for meaningful, multi-step software tasks.

• Capability to write clear strategies, specifications, and acceptance criteria; provide context; scope complex tasks; determine what to delegate; and redirect incomplete or incorrect approaches.

• Proficiency in critically reviewing AI-generated code, validating assumptions, identifying security, scalability, and maintainability risks, and spotting plausible but incorrect solutions.

• Hands-on experience creating production interfaces with JavaScript or TypeScript and React; preference for Next.js.

• Practical experience developing production services and APIs; ability to effectively work in or learn Go or Python.

• Familiarity with relational databases, SQL, schema design, transactions, and migrations.

• Experience with testing, accessibility, input validation, authentication, authorization, and web security practices.

• Ability to operate independently in ambiguous situations, identify high-leverage issues, align teams, make sound trade-offs, and connect decisions to product and business objectives.

• Skill in fostering alignment through clear proposals and reasoning, communicating risks and trade-offs across functions, and driving clarity during disagreements.

• Curiosity about evolving models, tools, and practices, combined with an evidence-based approach.

• Dedication to user experience, reliability, scalability, maintainable code, and effective AI-enabled practices.
