Staff Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Establish the technical direction for the specified technical domain.

• Make and justify architectural and infrastructure decisions by considering factors such as cost, operational impact, hiring implications, exit costs, and capabilities.

• Develop core components for new systems, reference implementations, and tools.

• Enhance existing systems through decomposition, strangler patterns, deprecations, and migrations.

• Design for potential failure domains and outline recovery strategies for partner-feed failures, vendor API deprecations, and regional outages.

• Take ownership of modeling, joining, and serving eligibility, claims, clinical, and quality data for product and analytics purposes.

• Create and promote the adoption of cross-cutting standards for schemas, service templates, CI/CD, environments, and test data.

• Transform recurring incidents into structural resolutions.

• Manage technical debt as a portfolio.

• Conduct technical interviews, calibrate hiring and promotion decisions, and mentor senior engineers.

• Clearly communicate complex technical issues to both engineering and non-engineering leadership.

• Engage hands-on across the technology stack while reporting to the Head of Engineering - Applications.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of professional software engineering experience, including experience owning systems that are utilized by other engineers.

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or Engineering; exceptional experience may be considered in lieu of this requirement.

• Full-stack experience, having ownership of systems from the data layer up to the API and UI.

• Proficient in TypeScript and SQL, with extensive experience in data modeling and data-intensive systems.

• Expertise in data and analytics, including both transactional and analytical data design.

• Practical experience with React.

• Experience with Docker and container-based deployments.

• Hands-on ownership of infrastructure on at least one major public cloud platform: Azure, AWS, or GCP.

• Strong skills in AI development tools such as coding agents and assistants.

• Preferred: Familiarity with database modeling and migration frameworks such as Drizzle, Prisma, SQLAlchemy, or Alembic.

• Preferred: Proficiency across multiple cloud platforms, including Azure, AWS, and GCP, with knowledge of cloud IAM, role design, and least-privilege access.

• Preferred: Proficiency in Python.

• Preferred: Experience in designing LLM-driven systems in production, covering tool usage, retrieval-augmented generation, evaluation, cost management, and safety.

• Preferred: Experience with healthcare data, including eligibility, claims, clinical data, HL7/FHIR, or payer/provider integrations at a multi-tenant scale.

• Preferred: Familiarity with HIPAA compliance, PHI handling, and audit requirements in system design.
