Staff Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and enhance applications using Java/Spring and React to support scientific workflows related to variant identification, curation, ranking, and clinical reporting.

• Create and manage data models, APIs, and search/query strategies that enable rapid and precise filtering, faceting, and retrieval of large-scale genomic variant data.

• Collaborate directly with scientific and clinical subject matter experts to transform intricate domain requirements into clear, well-defined technical designs.

• Guide the design and development of scalable, maintainable, and secure solutions, while fostering alignment on technical direction across teams through design documentation and architecture reviews.

• Diagnose and resolve complex production issues across the tech stack, addressing root causes and significantly enhancing system reliability, observability, and performance.

• Effectively and responsibly utilize AI-assisted development tools to expedite delivery, while assisting the team in establishing sound practices for their use.

• Promote best practices in software engineering, ensuring high code quality, automated testing, and CI/CD protocols.

• Perform additional duties as assigned.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

• Over 8 years of experience in software engineering, particularly in full-stack application development.

• Demonstrated leadership experience, capable of leading by example and mentoring fellow engineers.

• Strong proficiency in cloud-based solutions and experience integrating third-party software into existing systems.

• Extensive background in building service-oriented architectures and designing RESTful API services to support scalable and maintainable applications.

• Exceptional problem-solving capabilities, with a knack for troubleshooting and efficiently resolving technical challenges.

• Strong communication skills, able to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

• Experience with search and query technologies such as OpenSearch or Elasticsearch, including index and mapping design, query performance tuning, and faceted filtering for large datasets.

• Familiarity with Java/Spring and React.

• Experience working with relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL technologies (OpenSearch/Elasticsearch, MongoDB, DynamoDB).
