Staff Software Development Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Rhode Island.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and maintain backend microservices utilizing Java/JEE and Spring Boot.

• Create secure, efficient, and resilient RESTful APIs.

• Implement event-driven architectures using Apache Kafka, including producers, consumers, schema evolution, partitioning, and consumer groups.

• Model and exchange JSON data with comprehensive validation, versioning, and backward compatibility.

• Construct and uphold CI/CD pipelines with testing, static analysis, artifact promotion, and progressive delivery.

• Integrate automated security measures with Security and DevOps teams, encompassing SAST, DAST, dependency and image scanning, as well as secrets management.

• Deploy and manage services on Google Cloud Platform using GKE or Cloud Run, IAM, and managed data services.

• Apply 12-factor app principles, infrastructure-as-code, and best practices for configuration management.

• Integrate backend services with EHR systems and healthcare data standards such as HL7 v2, FHIR, SMART on FHIR, and CCD/C-CDA.

• Ensure compliance with HIPAA, data governance, and platform security requirements, including encryption both in transit and at rest.

• Take ownership of production readiness concerning availability, latency, throughput, and cost efficiency.

• Diagnose and resolve production issues, conduct root cause analyses, and drive reliability enhancements using SLIs, SLOs, and error budgets.

• Implement observability through structured logging, metrics, and tracing.

• Engage in architecture reviews, code reviews, and technical design discussions.

• Mentor junior engineers.

• Collaborate with product, architecture, security, and DevOps teams to deliver reliable services that integrate with healthcare ecosystems and third-party platforms.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 7 years of professional software development experience with Java/JEE and Spring Boot.

• More than 5 years of experience in building RESTful microservices and distributed systems.

• Strong understanding of REST API design, JSON data modeling, and OpenAPI/Swagger documentation.

• At least 5 years of practical experience with CI/CD pipelines and containerized workloads.

• Proficiency with Docker; Kubernetes experience is preferred.

• Over 3 years of experience managing production services in cloud environments, preferably GCP.

• More than 3 years of experience with Kafka or similar event-streaming platforms.

• At least 3 years of knowledge in security fundamentals, including OAuth2/OIDC, TLS, and secrets management.

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience (high school diploma + 4 years of related experience).

• Preferred experience in healthcare, regulated systems, or large-scale data integration platforms.

• Cloud certification is preferred.

• Familiarity with Spanner, BigQuery, Cloud SQL, or similar managed data services is preferred.

• Familiarity with observability, monitoring, and alerting systems such as Grafana and Splunk is preferred.

• Certification as a Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) is a plus.
