Staff Front End Engineer – Portable Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Develop and implement the frontend architecture for the Portable Platform utilizing web technologies and React Native.

• Spearhead Canva's shift from React Web to an integrated React Web and React Native approach.

• Create web adaptations of shared Portable Platform abstractions for iOS, Android, and browser environments.

• Facilitate the growth of over 600 frontend engineers through the establishment of code standards, comprehensive documentation, design reviews, and teamwork.

• Analyze server-side rendering and React Server Components within the context of the portable frontend architecture.

• Remain actively involved by coding, producing design documents, and making production commits.

• Take ownership of the architectural layer and set up reusable patterns and defaults for Canva's frontend team.

• Collaborate with the Principal Engineer and engineers focused on mobile development.

• Provide a frontend layer that empowers React engineers to develop once for both web and React Native platforms.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive experience with React, including its reconciliation, rendering processes, and the server component model.

• Proven track record of driving measurable performance improvements in complex frontend applications.

• Experience working with portable or cross-platform codebases that span various runtimes.

• Knowledge of the distinctions between React Native and React Web, along with cross-runtime engineering considerations.

• Ability to influence multiple teams through effective documentation, prototypes, and direct collaboration.

• Engaged in hands-on coding on a daily basis, with recent contributions, design documents, and review activities.

• Familiarity with AI tools in practical engineering scenarios and insight into their effects on frontend development.

• Understanding of server-side rendering and React Server Components.

• Experience with React Native is an advantage.

• Contributions to open-source projects related to React, React Native, or the larger frontend community are a plus.

• Experience in creating shared design systems or component libraries across various rendering environments is a plus.
