Staff Front End Engineer – Portable Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Create and deliver the frontend architecture that empowers React engineers to develop once and deploy across both web and React Native platforms.

• Spearhead the shift from a solely React Web codebase to a combined React Web and React Native framework.

• Develop web implementations of shared Portable Platform components compatible with iOS, Android, and web browsers.

• Facilitate the skills development of over 600 frontend engineers through code standards, comprehensive documentation, design reviews, and direct collaboration.

• Incorporate server-side rendering and considerations for React Server Components into the portable frontend infrastructure.

• Remain actively involved by producing production code, drafting design documents, and conducting reviews.

• Take ownership of the architectural layer during Canva's transition to the Portable Platform.

• Set up patterns and standards for Canva's frontend organization.

• Work closely with the Principal Engineer and engineers focused on mobile.

• Achieve the delivery of a functional frontend layer within a 12-month timeframe.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive knowledge of React, including reconciliation, rendering models, and the server component model.

• Experience in making decisions that go beyond the framework's surface.

• Demonstrated success in optimizing performance on a complex frontend product with quantifiable improvements.

• Background in dealing with portable or cross-platform codebases that span multiple runtimes.

• Understanding the distinctions between React Native and React Web, and cross-runtime engineering considerations.

• Proven ability to influence various teams through documentation, prototypes, and hands-on collaboration.

• Active involvement in daily coding with recent commits, design documents, and reviews.

• Experience utilizing AI tools in practical engineering tasks.

• Familiarity with server-side rendering and React Server Components patterns.

• Direct experience with React Native is a plus.

• Contributions to open-source projects related to React, React Native, or the broader frontend ecosystem are advantageous.

• Experience in developing shared design systems or component libraries across different rendering environments is beneficial.
