Staff Front End Engineer – Portable Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Architect and develop the frontend framework for React to function across both web and React Native platforms.

• Spearhead the migration from a purely React Web codebase to a combined React Web and React Native environment.

• Create web implementations for shared Portable Platform components.

• Facilitate the skill enhancement of over 600 frontend engineers through code standards, documentation, design reviews, and direct collaboration.

• Incorporate server-side rendering and considerations for React Server Components into the portable frontend layer.

• Produce design documents, commit production-level code, and maintain an active role in the codebase.

• Define frontend architecture, patterns, and defaults for Canva’s Portable Platform.

• Collaborate with the Principal Engineer and mobile-focused engineers on the platform's architecture.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive experience with React, encompassing reconciliation, rendering, and the server component model.

• Proven track record of making decisions beneath the framework level.

• Demonstrated ability to achieve measurable performance improvements on complex frontend products.

• Experience with portable or cross-platform codebases that span multiple runtimes.

• Knowledge of the differences between React Native and React Web, as well as cross-runtime engineering trade-offs.

• Experience in influencing various teams through documentation, prototypes, and direct collaboration.

• Practical day-to-day coding experience, including recent commits, design documents, and reviews.

• Experience utilizing AI tools in practical engineering tasks.

• Familiarity with server-side rendering and React Server Components is advantageous.

• Hands-on experience with React Native is a plus.

• Contributions to open-source projects related to React, React Native, or the frontend ecosystem are a plus.

• Experience in developing shared design systems or component libraries across different rendering environments is a plus.
