Staff Front End Engineer – Mobile Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Develop the frontend aspect of the Portable Platform: Create and deliver the frontend architecture that enables React engineers to write once and deploy across both web and React Native environments.

• Spearhead the transition from React Web to React Native: Manage the shift from a purely React Web codebase to a hybrid model that incorporates both React Web and React Native.

• Take ownership of web implementations for shared abstractions: Construct the web components of shared Portable Platform features, ensuring consistent functionality across iOS, Android, and web browsers.

• Facilitate the upskilling of frontend engineers: Assist them in grasping the new mental framework through code standards, documentation, design reviews, and direct collaboration.

• Integrate SSR and React Server Components: Analyze server-side rendering and RSC, understanding how a backend connects with the portable frontend layer.

• Remain actively involved: Engineers at Canva write code. You’ll engage with the codebase, author design documents, and contribute directly to production.

⛳️ Requirements

• In-depth React experience: You possess a thorough understanding of React’s architecture, reconciliation, rendering model, and server component model.

• Strong performance insight: You have successfully driven measurable improvements on a complex frontend product and can differentiate between genuine wins and misleading benchmarks.

• Experience with portable or cross-platform projects: You have contributed to a codebase that operates across multiple runtimes and comprehend the trade-offs involved in component layer abstraction.

• Understanding of the React Native mental model: While not a mobile expert, you recognize how React Native varies from React Web and how engineering approaches must adapt for both environments.

• Ability to influence across teams: You have successfully delivered a project that transformed how multiple teams operate, utilizing documentation, prototypes, and direct discussions.

• Hands-on coding experience: You are actively writing code on a daily basis, with recent commits, design documents, and reviews to show for it.

• AI proficiency: You have utilized AI tools in real engineering scenarios and have insights into their impact on frontend development.

• Bonus: Familiarity with SSR and React Server Components: Knowledge of server-side rendering and RSC patterns, including how a backend integrates with a React frontend and its relevance to the Portable Platform.

• Practical React Native experience: Hands-on work with React Native, even at a beginner level, is advantageous.

• Contributions to open-source: Involvement with React, React Native, or the wider frontend ecosystem.

• Expertise in design systems or component libraries: Experience in creating shared component abstractions that are utilized by other engineers, particularly those that function across various rendering environments.
