This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States, +1 more country.
• Develop and implement Life360’s reusable on-device inference framework, covering runtime, model integration, sampling, and preprocessing pipelines.
• Make strategic platform choices regarding runtime and model format, memory/flash budgets, and over-the-air model updates.
• Design, implement, and troubleshoot the platform on devices deployed in the field.
• Incorporate inference into resource-constrained firmware such as Zephyr or FreeRTOS.
• Manage low-level drivers, DMA data paths, SPI/I²C interfaces, and middleware.
• Perform hardware debugging using tools like oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and JTAG.
• Investigate and resolve firmware/hardware cross-layer issues down to the root cause.
• Regularly handle firmware feature enhancements, bug fixes, field issues, and on-call/triage tasks.
• Deploy, quantize, optimize, and validate machine learning models on-device.
• Optimize the balance among model accuracy, power consumption, memory usage, and latency.
• Coordinate efforts among firmware, app/cloud, data science, hardware, and operations teams regarding on-device intelligence.
• Elevate embedded-ML and AI-native development proficiency through code reviews, design documentation, and collaborative work.
• Deliver 2–3 on-device ML features to the Pet GPS fleet and diagnose production issues based on device logs.
• Over 10 years of firmware engineering experience in bringing complex consumer hardware from prototype to mass production.
• Proven history of shipping consumer hardware at scale.
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
• Extensive expertise in C/C++ for embedded systems.
• Proficient understanding of RTOS internals, including Zephyr, FreeRTOS, or similar.
• Strong low-level hardware knowledge, specifically with SPI, I²C, UART, DMA, interrupts, and driver development based on datasheets.
• Practical debugging experience with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and JTAG.
• Knowledge of power and memory management in embedded systems.
• Demonstrated experience in deploying ML models on microcontroller-class hardware for a shipping product.
• Hands-on familiarity with TFLite Micro, CMSIS-NN, ExecuTorch, or comparable technologies.
• Experience in model optimization techniques, including quantization and pruning.
• Ability to independently develop and train machine learning models.
• Understanding of sensor data and signal processing pipelines, including IMU data.
• Regular use of AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, or similar.
• Critical evaluation of AI-generated code and AI-assisted model outputs.
• Excellent written communication and documentation skills across firmware, hardware, and data science domains.
• Preferred qualifications include experience with secure boot, key provisioning, signed and rollback-safe OTA, FCC/CE certification, cellular, BLE, GPS/GNSS, audio, new-board bring-up, schematic evaluation, manufacturing test development, and production-line support.
