Staff FinOps Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Utah.

📋 Description

• Lead the development of Cloud Financial Strategy and Governance.

• Implement FinOps practices across AWS and Azure by utilizing the FinOps Foundation Framework domains.

• Create and uphold cost allocation models, tagging standards, and governance frameworks.

• Formulate and enforce cloud financial policies, standards, and operational best practices.

• Collaborate with leadership to facilitate cloud cost reduction initiatives and achieve long-term infrastructure efficiency goals.

• Propel Cost Visibility and Financial Insights.

• Oversee and manage CloudZero configuration, encompassing taxonomy, tagging governance, and cost allocation rules.

• Provide actionable reporting and analysis for Engineering, Product, Finance, and leadership stakeholders.

• Maintain visibility across AWS, Azure, Datadog, Elastic, and other related platforms.

• Advance cost intelligence initiatives, including unit economics and cost-per-customer analysis.

• Optimize Cloud and SaaS Spending.

• Identify and promote optimization opportunities across Reserved Instances, Savings Plans, rightsizing, storage optimization, and SaaS licensing.

• Develop and sustain utilization and cost-per-unit reporting across key infrastructure and vendor platforms.

• Collaborate with Engineering teams to enhance cost-aware architecture and operational decision-making.

• Monitor optimization initiatives through measurable outcomes and continuous KPI reporting.

• Build and Scale the FinOps Practice.

• Integrate FinOps processes into budgeting, forecasting, operational reviews, and engineering workflows.

• Mentor Engineering and CloudOps teams on cost accountability and sustainable financial operations.

• Automate repeatable governance and reporting workflows utilizing SQL, Python, and infrastructure tooling.

• Promote the adoption of emerging FinOps standards.

• Support Emerging AI and Platform Cost Management.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 5 years of experience in cloud financial management, FinOps, cloud infrastructure operations, or related fields.

• In-depth expertise in AWS cost architecture and a strong working knowledge of Azure cost management.

• Experience in managing FinOps platforms, including ownership of cost allocation rules, tagging governance, and financial reporting structures.

• High proficiency in SQL and Python for reporting, analysis, and automation tasks.

• Experience in developing cloud cost forecasts, financial models, and executive-level variance reporting.

• Strong grasp of AWS cost optimization strategies, including Reserved Instances, Savings Plans, and enterprise discount models.

• Experience in implementing governance policies using Terraform, AWS Service Control Policies, or similar infrastructure-as-code methodologies.

• Proven ability to influence Engineering teams and drive operational changes without direct authority.

• Excellent analytical, communication, and stakeholder management capabilities.

• Practical understanding of the FinOps Foundation Framework, including its principles, capabilities, and operating model.
