Staff Backend Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Uruguay.

📋 Description

• Identify and implement enhancements to the codebase that facilitate swift and secure shipping for both humans and AI agents.

• Collaborate with a team of senior engineers in a trust-driven, low-process environment.

• Foster decision-making and consensus asynchronously through thorough documentation and specifications.

• Take ownership of features from start to finish — spanning backend systems to the partner-facing interface.

• Design scalable solutions and foundational patterns that enable efficient launches of new partner experiences.

• Work closely with PMs and business partners to outline and refine our strategic roadmap.

• An innate drive to courageously explore an unfamiliar codebase and produce rapid results.

• Strong product insight – your understanding of quality and architecture is rooted in enhancing the customer experience, rather than pursuing technical elegance for its own sake.

• Capability to guide AI agents and automated workflows in constructing and maintaining complex systems, along with the discernment to recognize when to intervene and when to allow them to operate independently.

• Experience in designing guardrails and feedback mechanisms that ensure AI-assisted development remains productive and reliable.

• Familiarity with, or a strong willingness to master, distributed system development in Scala.

• The skill to articulate not only how to resolve an issue, but also why and what trade-offs you are making.

• The successful candidate will engage with Hopper as an independent service provider.

• Contractors are fully responsible for their own equipment, workspace, and compliance with local Uruguayan tax and social security obligations (DGI/BPS).

• This engagement is governed by a commercial service agreement.

• This role does not include eligibility for company-sponsored benefits, statutory bonuses (Aguinaldo), or paid leave typically associated with a standard employment contract.
