Staff Backend Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.

📋 Description

• Identify and implement enhancements to the codebase that facilitate rapid development and safe deployment for both human developers and AI agents.

• Collaborate with a team of senior engineers in a low-process environment characterized by trust and autonomy.

• Foster decisions and consensus asynchronously through well-documented specifications.

• Take ownership of features from inception to completion — encompassing backend systems to partner-facing interfaces. While your primary focus will be on the backend, you should be prepared to utilize AI tools to navigate the stack as necessary. We prioritize your ability to deliver a fully functional feature over your capacity to recall production-grade React from memory.

• Design scalable solutions and foundational patterns that enable the efficient launch of new partner experiences.

• Engage directly with PMs and business partners to establish and refine our strategic roadmap. Your insights and technical vision are valuable.

• Work alongside a diverse group of individuals, exchanging feedback to foster personal and professional growth.

• Strong product-oriented mindset — your understanding of quality and architecture is rooted in the customer experience, rather than solely in technical sophistication.

• Proficiency in directing AI agents and automated workflows to construct and sustain complex systems, along with the discernment to recognize when to intervene or allow them to operate independently.

• Experience in establishing guardrails and feedback mechanisms that ensure AI-assisted development remains productive and reliable.

• Familiarity with, or a strong willingness to master, distributed system development in Scala.

• The capacity to articulate not only how to resolve a problem, but also the rationale behind your approach and the trade-offs you're willing to accept.
