Staff Backend Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Argentina.

📋 Description

• Identify and implement enhancements to the codebase that facilitate rapid and safe shipping for both human developers and AI agents.

• Collaborate with a team of senior engineers within a low-process environment that emphasizes trust and autonomy.

• Lead decision-making and consensus-building asynchronously through thorough documentation and specifications.

• Take ownership of features from start to finish — encompassing backend systems to partner-facing interfaces. Your primary focus will be on the backend, but you should be prepared to utilize AI tools to navigate across the stack as required. We value your ability to deliver a complete feature over merely recalling production-grade React from memory.

• Design scalable solutions and foundational patterns that enable us to efficiently launch new experiences for our partners.

• Work closely with Product Managers and business partners to define and refine our strategic roadmap. Your insights and technical vision are significant.

• Engage with a diverse team, offering and receiving constructive feedback to foster personal and professional growth.

• A natural inclination to confidently explore an unfamiliar codebase and produce results swiftly.

• Strong product-oriented mindset — your understanding of quality and architecture is rooted in customer experience rather than technical sophistication for its own sake.

• Capability to guide AI agents and automated workflows in building and maintaining complex systems, along with the discernment to know when to intervene and when to allow them to operate independently.

• Experience in creating the guardrails and feedback mechanisms that ensure AI-assisted development remains productive and dependable.

• Proficiency in, or a strong willingness to learn, distributed system development using Scala.

• Ability to articulate not only how to tackle a problem but also why your approach is valid and what tradeoffs you are making.

• This role is offered as an Independent Contractor position (Locación de Servicios) based in Argentina, supporting the Hopper Cloud / HTS business unit. The successful candidate will engage with Hopper as an independent service provider and will not be classified as a legal employee under Argentine Labor Law. As a result, the contractor is solely responsible for their equipment, workspace, and compliance with all local tax and social security obligations, including registration and payments under the Monotributo or Régimen General (AFIP). This engagement is governed by a commercial service agreement and does not include eligibility for company-sponsored benefits, statutory 13th-month salary (Aguinaldo), or paid vacation (Vacaciones pagas) typically associated with traditional employment relationships.
