Staff Backend Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Serbia.

📋 Description

• Oversee and enhance the core system, APIs, and associated components.

• Improve data storage and backend systems to optimize throughput, latency, and scalability.

• Drive the evolution of architecture and manage technical debt in accordance with the product vision.

• Ensure the system is AI-ready and prepared for future advancements.

• Foster an agentic engineering culture within the team by setting a strong example.

• Work closely with the Head of Engineering on product architecture decisions.

• Execute the implementation of new features directly.

• Adapt and evolve APIs to support AI/ML-driven applications.

• Engage with a product that handles petabytes of biological data.

• Contribute to software development in life sciences, drug discovery, and bioinformatics.

⛳️ Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in software engineering, primarily focusing on backend development.

• Profound understanding of computer science fundamentals (OOP, algorithms, data structures).

• Extensive experience with various data storage solutions: RDBMS, columnar databases, search engines, and other NoSQL technologies.

• Strong experience with messaging systems.

• Demonstrated experience in fostering agentic engineering practices.

• Expert-level proficiency in Java and Kotlin.

• Proven track record in system-level refactoring.

• Ability to identify and resolve performance bottlenecks effectively.

• Experience in defining and achieving performance benchmarks.

• Quick to learn in complex domains.

• Interest in life sciences, data science, and applications of ML/AI.

• Exceptional communication and collaboration skills.

• Fluent in English.
