
Staff Backend Engineer – AI Governance

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in India.
• Define and lead the backend architecture for AI governance systems, focusing on auditability, policy enforcement, and enterprise reporting capabilities to enhance governance coverage and facilitate reliable enterprise adoption.
• Design the AI audit event system, encompassing event schema, pipelines, storage patterns, retention considerations, and export surfaces to ensure reliable audit visibility and meet customer reporting and compliance requirements.
• Develop and oversee the integration layer between the Duo Agent Platform and governance capabilities, enabling observation and control of agent actions at critical execution points, thereby minimizing governance gaps throughout agent workflows.
• Provide guidance on the technical design for tool and registry governance, including metadata models, permissions, and controls for managed tool usage to ensure safer, more consistent, and governable tool access.
• Establish backend foundations for a declarative policy framework that dictates which agents and tools can be utilized under specified conditions, assisting customers in consistently enforcing governance requirements across diverse environments.
• Promote architectural consistency and implementation quality among teams by reviewing significant merge requests and contributing to technical RFCs, thus preventing design drift as the product evolves.
• Enhance team effectiveness and technical decision-making through mentoring other engineers, offering design guidance and feedback, and coordinating efforts across teams to elevate the overall technical standard.
• Expedite delivery and enhance consistency across shared initiatives by collaborating with engineering teams to align the governance architecture with existing platform patterns and the broader product direction.
• Extensive experience in designing and operating backend systems at scale, particularly in areas demanding auditability, governance, or compliance.
• In-depth understanding of authorization and access control patterns, including role-based access control (RBAC), attribute-based access control (ABAC), and policy-as-code methodologies.
• Strong proficiency in Ruby on Rails within production SaaS environments.
• Significant experience in Python, particularly in systems related to AI services, orchestration layers, or service integrations.
• Experience in designing REST APIs and GraphQL APIs for both internal and external platform use.
• Familiarity with high-scale data and storage systems, including technologies like Postgres and ClickHouse.
• Proven track record of guiding large, cross-team technical initiatives in an asynchronous, RFC-driven engineering environment.
• Ability to clearly communicate technical decisions in both written and verbal formats, make sound trade-offs during design and implementation, and influence technical direction across teams while collaborating effectively in a remote setting.
