SQL Database Administrator

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Alabama, +7 more states.

📋 Description

• Oversee, configure, monitor, patch, upgrade, and sustain Microsoft SQL Server database environments across development, testing, and production systems.

• Install and set up SQL Server instances, databases, SQL Server Agent jobs, linked servers, maintenance plans, and associated database services.

• Monitor system availability, capacity, performance, blocking, deadlocks, waits, storage usage, and overall health.

• Conduct SQL performance tuning, which includes query analysis, execution-plan reviews, indexing strategies, statistics upkeep, and stored-procedure optimization.

• Design, implement, test, and uphold backup and recovery strategies.

• Support high-availability and disaster-recovery technologies such as Always On Availability Groups, failover clustering, log shipping, and replication.

• Manage database security, including roles, permissions, service accounts, encryption, auditing, and access controls.

• Apply SQL Server security updates, cumulative updates, and version upgrades following approved change-management procedures.

• Create, review, and maintain T-SQL scripts, stored procedures, functions, views, indexes, SQL Agent jobs, and maintenance routines.

• Collaborate with application developers on database designs, data models, queries, stored procedures, and deployment scripts.

• Facilitate database deployments via CI/CD and DevOps methodologies.

• Automate routine administration tasks using PowerShell, T-SQL, SQL Server Agent, and sanctioned scripting tools.

• Maintain database documentation, configuration standards, data dictionaries, runbooks, recovery procedures, and operational documentation.

• Engage in incident response, root-cause analysis, problem management, and production support.

• Monitor capacity, storage growth, retention, archiving, and data lifecycle requirements.

• Assist with integrations and data movement utilizing SSIS, APIs, ETL/ELT processes, and secure file/data transfer methods.

• Collaborate with infrastructure, security, development, QA, and DevOps teams.

• Assess and support SQL Server workloads hosted on-premises and in cloud environments, including AWS.

• Ensure that systems and changes adhere to security, audit, business continuity, change management, and production standards.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Database Administration, Software Engineering, or a related field is preferred; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.

• 2–4 years of experience in managing Microsoft SQL Server environments is preferred.

• Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate (DP-300) is highly preferred, or an equivalent current Microsoft data-platform/database administration certification.

• Additional current Microsoft Azure, Windows Server, security, or data-platform certifications are preferred.

• Strong grasp of Microsoft SQL Server administration, architecture, configuration, security, backup/recovery, and performance tuning.

• Proficiency in T-SQL, SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), SQL Server Agent, execution plans, indexing, stored procedures, and database troubleshooting.

• Working knowledge of SQL Server high-availability and disaster-recovery technologies, including Always On Availability Groups and failover concepts.

• Experience with database backup, restoration, recovery testing, integrity checks, and disaster-recovery procedures.

• Understanding of database security principles, including least privilege, role-based access, encryption, auditing, authentication, and secure configuration.

• Experience using PowerShell and/or T-SQL for automating database administration and operational tasks.

• Familiarity with Windows Server, Active Directory, networking, storage, virtualization, and infrastructure concepts that affect SQL Server.

• Familiarity with Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, SQL Server on Azure/AWS, or other cloud-hosted SQL Server environments.

• Familiarity with DevOps practices, Git, CI/CD pipelines, database deployment tools, monitoring, and observability.

• Ability to engage in scheduled maintenance and production support activities as business needs dictate.
