This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.
• Take ownership of the technical solution throughout the entire project lifecycle.
• Evaluate and enhance application and system performance across Java, IBM i/AS400, and DB2 environments.
• Identify performance bottlenecks within application, database, operating system, and infrastructure layers.
• Suggest and implement strategies aimed at improving responsiveness, throughput, resource utilization, scalability, and stability.
• Review the behavior of Java applications, focusing on memory utilization, garbage collection, threading, connection management, and application server performance.
• Assess the performance of IBM i systems, including workload management, job activity, CPU and memory consumption, subsystem configuration, and resource utilization.
• Analyze DB2 performance, covering query execution, indexing, access paths, SQL efficiency, locking, database configuration, and workload behavior.
• Investigate technical options to guide solution architecture and modernization strategies.
• Design solutions that incorporate Java, PHP, IBM i, DB2, and other relevant technologies.
• Convert business and technical requirements into scalable, maintainable, and supportable solution designs.
• Facilitate technical discovery sessions, architecture workshops, and solution design discussions.
• Present, clarify, and advocate for architectural recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Generate architecture documentation, technical specifications, diagrams, recommendations, and implementation roadmaps.
• Collaborate with development, infrastructure, database, delivery, and client teams.
• Promote architecture standards, development tools, performance monitoring tools, and best practices for delivery.
• Act as a senior technical escalation point during discovery, development, testing, deployment, and production support.
• Balance modernization goals with complex legacy and mission-critical environments.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
• 12+ years of practical experience in designing and architecting large-scale, web-based enterprise systems.
• Proven experience as a Solution Architect, Technical Architect, or senior application architect.
• Advanced web application development experience with Java, PHP, or similar enterprise application platforms.
• Extensive experience in diagnosing and resolving intricate application and system performance issues.
• Practical knowledge of Java performance optimization, covering JVM behavior, memory management, garbage collection, threading, application servers, and application profiling.
• Experience evaluating performance in IBM i, iSeries, or AS400 environments.
• Strong understanding of DB2 performance optimization, including SQL tuning, indexing, query plans, access paths, locking, and database workload analysis.
• Ability to investigate performance issues across application code, database, operating system, middleware, and infrastructure.
• Experience designing solutions for complex, integrated, and business-critical application environments.
• Strong skills in technical documentation, presentation, and stakeholder management.
• Ability to communicate and justify technical decisions with clients, development teams, and senior stakeholders.
• Capability to manage competing priorities and provide architectural leadership across multiple projects simultaneously.
• Preferred: experience with RPG applications and IBM i modernization initiatives.
• Preferred: experience in modernizing or integrating legacy IBM i applications with Java, PHP, APIs, web applications, or cloud-based platforms.
• Preferred: familiarity with IBM i performance monitoring and diagnostic tools.
• Preferred: experience in application profiling, database monitoring, capacity planning, and performance testing tools.
• Preferred: knowledge of cloud, hybrid-cloud, containerized, or distributed application architectures.
• Preferred: experience in consulting, professional services, or client-facing delivery environments.
