Software Engineer, Networking – Edge

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Leverage your extensive expertise in network engineering along with software development and SRE/DevOps skills to design, build, and manage Tailscale’s global Funnel and DERP relay infrastructure.

• Foster operational excellence and automation to ensure the scalability, high availability, and performance of hosted services.

• Provide architectural direction and troubleshoot advanced networking issues for customers to resolve complex connectivity challenges.

• Collaborate with internal engineering and product teams to enhance hosted services and clients, ensuring updates deliver significant value to our customer base.

• Contribute to the open-source client code and develop the Tailscale product dataplane to support network connectivity capabilities and features.

• Design, build, assess, and document networking features, connectivity solutions, and the open-source client-code network dataplane.

• Improve and iterate on product capabilities, particularly focusing on Funnel and DERP relay infrastructures and their related network protocols.

• Investigate and resolve intricate, escalated network issues encountered across various technical environments.

• Take responsibility for Tailscale's live services by implementing observability, participating in incident management, and handling technical support escalations.

• Assess and enhance the performance, reliability, and scalability of our networking resources and systems.

• Adopt a security-focused approach at every stage of development, from initial design through to the final implementation of networking components.

⛳️ Requirements

• Demonstrated experience in networking software development and troubleshooting.

• Strong understanding of core networking concepts such as VPNs, NAT traversal, routing, and IP addressing.

• Experience with distributed systems, maintaining services at a global scale, and applying SRE & DevOps practices.

• Most of our systems are developed in Go; experience with Go is highly preferred.

• Excellent interpersonal skills for providing constructive feedback and the ability to work independently.

• Ability to adapt and excel in a dynamic startup environment.

• Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
