Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Create software solutions that support applied R&D initiatives for DoD, U.S. Government clients, commercial partners, and internal research projects.

• Contribute to fast prototyping, proof-of-concept creation, research software development, data collection and analysis, user interface design, web applications, and production-quality software.

• Collaborate with colleagues to clarify changing requirements, determine suitable solutions, and seek advice when necessary.

• Employ software engineering practices throughout design, implementation, testing, debugging, documentation, version control, and code reviews.

• Integrate software with sensors, instruments, commercial components, and other hardware systems according to the needs of the program.

• Engage in occasional customer meetings, demonstrations, field tests, and various program activities.

• Collaborate with local and remote engineers across SRI’s technology sectors.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline.

• Recent graduates and early-career applicants are encouraged to apply.

• Must be a U.S. citizen.

• Capability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

• Solid fundamentals in software engineering and computer science, including software design, data structures, algorithms, debugging, and testing.

• Familiarity with Git and version control, automated testing, continuous integration/deployment, APIs, containers, Linux, and cloud development environments.

• Experience with two or more general-purpose programming languages is highly preferred.

• Experience in integrating software with sensors, instrumentation, embedded systems, or other hardware is highly advantageous for current program requirements.

• Familiarity with AI-assisted and agentic software development tools is desirable.

• Willingness and ability to learn new programming languages, technologies, frameworks, and development environments.

• Strong communication and teamwork abilities.

• Effectiveness in managing evolving requirements across exploratory, demonstration, and production-focused projects.

• Willingness to travel occasionally for customer meetings, demonstrations, field tests, and other program-related activities.
