Software Engineer – 6 to 12 Month Contract

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Illinois.

📋 Description

• Develop and sustain features within the TypeScript/Node.js backend and Vue.js frontend.

• Deliver features from start to finish and influence technical decisions.

• Design and refine data models in MongoDB and PostgreSQL, subject to senior-engineer review.

• Utilize AWS services like Lambda, S3, Aurora, DynamoDB, and IAM for work development and deployment.

• Produce clean, tested, and maintainable code.

• Engage constructively in code reviews.

• Assist in the creation of the new civic assembly platform, including modules within a plugin-based framework.

• Clearly and proactively communicate progress, obstacles, and inquiries.

• Collaborate with the CTO, product manager, program teams, and senior engineers.

• Provide mentorship to other engineers.

• Contribute to the platforms that support Unify America's civic engagement initiatives.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 3 years of professional software engineering experience.

• Strong proficiency in TypeScript and NodeJS.

• Experience with Django and Python.

• Familiarity with VueJS (preferred) or React.

• Practical experience with PostgreSQL and MongoDB, including the ability to design sensible schemas for well-defined features without relying on AI tools.

• Knowledge of AWS services such as Lambda, S3, Aurora, DynamoDB, and IAM.

• Experience with AI-assisted development tools like Claude, GitHub Copilot, or ChatGPT used judiciously.

• Strong communication skills and comfort working asynchronously in a distributed team environment.

• Demonstrated initiative, reliability, and a commitment to quality over quantity.

• A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field is preferred.

• Relevant certifications, bootcamp credentials, or equivalent professional experience are welcome.

• Experience with NestJS is a plus.

• Familiarity with Terraform or other infrastructure-as-code tools is also a plus.

• Experience in nonprofit, civic tech, or educational technology is advantageous.

• Must be a resident of the United States.
