Software Development Manager

Posted Jun 21

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Maine.

📋 Description

• Lead a small, highly efficient agile engineering team (usually consisting of 3–5 developers), responsible for the team’s delivery, quality, and overall well-being.

• Manage and nurture the engineers on your team — conducting regular 1:1 meetings, establishing clear expectations, providing honest and timely feedback, supporting career advancement, and performing performance evaluations.

• Recruit, onboard, and retain top engineering talent, fostering a team culture characterized by inclusion, high standards, and continuous learning.

• Drive outcomes by converting product strategy into a tangible delivery plan, breaking down tasks into achievable milestones, eliminating obstacles, and ensuring the team is accountable for their commitments.

• Collaborate closely with product owners and product management to determine priorities, scope, and trade-offs that balance customer value, technical integrity, and delivery speed.

• Stay hands-on by meaningfully contributing to design discussions, code reviews, prototypes, and complex problem-solving across the entire web application stack (typically dedicating 30–50% of your time).

• Lead technical discussions and decisions, impacting architecture and design within your team and across other squads.

• Organize, document, and communicate technical projects — including status updates, risks, and key decisions — to engineering colleagues, product partners, and senior leadership.

• Work alongside DevOps and other technical teams to strategize, build, and release high-quality software, while enhancing CI/CD workflows using tools like Jenkins and GitHub Actions.

• Utilize AI-assisted development tools (e.g., LLM-based coding assistants and agents) to enhance your team’s productivity, code quality, and design exploration — while helping to establish responsible and effective usage patterns.

• Maintain accountability for the operational health of your team’s systems, collaborating with the team to troubleshoot and resolve build failures, deployment errors, production incidents, and pipeline issues as they occur.

• Cultivate a culture of innovation, inclusion, psychological safety, and thoughtful risk-taking — creating an environment where engineers can perform at their best.

⛳️ Requirements

• People leadership experience — you have managed or led engineers (in a formal managerial role, team lead, or equivalent) and genuinely enjoy fostering the growth of your team members.

• A strong drive, ownership mentality, and results-oriented approach — you establish clear goals, prioritize tasks, and fulfill commitments without compromising on quality.

• Exceptional analytical, verbal, and written communication skills, including the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical audiences and to listen attentively across various functions.

• Strong instincts for product partnership — you work closely with product owners, ask insightful questions, and help shape outcomes rather than merely executing tasks.

• Solid hands-on technical experience as a software engineer, maintaining credibility in design and code reviews and being able to contribute directly when necessary.

• Comprehensive knowledge of the full web application stack and a firm understanding of technologies from the database level to the presentation layer.

• Proficiency in PHP, Node.js, and/or other object-oriented and procedural programming languages, AWS Platform, REST APIs, and data modeling.

• Experience in designing system architectures and coordinating teams to design, code, test, and document significant system changes.

• Knowledge of relational databases and Structured Query Language (SQL), along with experience using Object-Relational Mapping (ORM) frameworks.

• Familiarity with AI-powered coding assistants and agents (e.g., Cursor or similar) and a clear understanding of their strengths, limitations, and potential failure points.

• Strong grasp of the software development lifecycle, agile methodologies, and contemporary CI/CD practices using tools such as Jenkins and GitHub Actions.

• Experience in hiring and a high standard for engineering talent — you can identify, attract, and develop exceptional engineers.

• Ability to balance competing priorities across personnel, delivery, and technical health, and to make pragmatic decisions in ambiguous circumstances.

• Robust general business acumen and company knowledge, with the ability to connect engineering efforts back to customer and business outcomes.
