This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Develop and direct ambitious research initiatives that align with our work portfolios, addressing complex inquiries that will guide GiveWell's grantmaking strategies.
• Become a vital member of a small grantmaking team, contributing to our ambitious research focus on water.
• Filter through numerous potential questions to identify those of greatest significance.
• Present your findings externally while mentoring and advising fellow researchers on the team.
• Design a research agenda that combines rigor and creativity to tackle the most challenging questions faced by the GiveWell water team.
• Manage grant investigations from inception to completion (including research question formulation through grant recommendations) and represent GiveWell to external stakeholders.
• An advanced degree with a quantitative focus (e.g., in epidemiology, environmental engineering, environmental health, public health, economics, or related disciplines).
• Significant professional experience in the water sector or a related field (broadly defined). This may encompass expertise in water quality, WASH, water infrastructure, environmental health modeling, or program implementation, evaluation, or funding. We particularly seek candidates with practical knowledge of water systems, epidemiology, or both. We do not expect any single candidate to possess extensive expertise across all areas we are investigating (chlorination, filtration, in-line UV, water access, market shaping, R&D), and we welcome strong researchers whose expertise may lie within any subset of these topics.
• Comprehensive health, dental, vision, and life insurance coverage (we pay 100% of premiums within the US for you and any dependents).
• Four weeks of paid time off annually, in addition to a one-week organization-wide summer break.
• 16 weeks of fully paid parental leave.
• Ergonomic home workstations or memberships to coworking spaces.
• Automatic contributions equivalent to 5% of your gross salary into your 403(b) retirement plan (for U.S.-based staff).
