Senior VMware Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Execute VMware Enterprise Migrations

• Carry out comprehensive end-to-end VMware datacenter migrations utilizing AWS Migration Services (MGN), CloudEndure, and HCX

• Conduct thorough VMware workload assessments, dependency mapping, and application discovery

• Develop and implement migration strategies in accordance with the 7Rs framework (Rehost, Replatform, Refactor, Repurchase, Retire, Retain, Relocate)

• Deploy and manage migration factory patterns for VMware datacenter exits involving 200-500 VMs per wave

• Plan wave-based migrations with minimal disruption to business operations and ensure tested rollback procedures

• Migrate intricate VMware environments including vMotion transitions, NSX networking conversions, and vSAN/VMFS storage migrations

• Build Migration Infrastructure

• Establish AWS landing zones and migration target environments following the Well-Architected Framework principles

• Implement hybrid connectivity solutions (Direct Connect, VPN, Transit Gateway) for migration networks

• Set up AWS migration tools: MGN replication servers, DMS endpoints, and Migration Hub tracking

• Transform VMware NSX micro-segmentation policies into AWS Security Groups and Network ACLs

• Migrate VMware vSAN/VMFS/NFS storage to suitable AWS storage services (S3, EBS, EFS, FSx)

• Design disaster recovery and business continuity architectures following migration

• Conduct post-migration validation, performance assessments, and optimization

• Automate Migration Workflows

• Develop Infrastructure-as-Code utilizing Terraform and CloudFormation to replicate VMware infrastructure patterns in AWS

• Write Python and PowerShell automation scripts for large-scale VM migration, validation, and cutover procedures

• Create CI/CD pipelines for the automated testing and deployment of migrated workloads

• Automate post-migration activities: tagging, monitoring setup, backup configuration, and security hardening

• Establish migration runbooks and standard operating procedures for consistent execution

• Enable Client Success

• Provide direct technical guidance to client VMware and cloud engineering teams throughout migration execution

• Facilitate migration workshops, cutover planning sessions, and incident response during maintenance windows

• Troubleshoot complex VMware-to-AWS migration issues (replication failures, networking concerns, application dependencies)

• Develop comprehensive migration documentation: runbooks, architecture diagrams, and lessons learned

• Support post-migration hypercare and stabilization activities

⛳️ Requirements

• 8-10+ years of experience in IT implementation or cloud engineering

• 5+ years of experience with VMware infrastructure, including vSphere, vCenter, ESXi, and NSX

• 5-6+ years of experience in developing AWS cloud infrastructure

• 3+ years of hands-on experience with VMware to AWS migration using MGN, CloudEndure, or HCX

• 2+ years of experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred)

• 2+ years of experience with DevOps toolchain (e.g., GitHub, GitLab, AWS Code* Suite)

• Recent AWS experience within the past year

• Proficient with primary AWS services (Compute, Storage, Networking, RDS)

• Proven track record in implementing AWS migration services targeting VMware workloads

• Experience executing VMware to AWS migrations at scale (200-500 VMs per project)

• Demonstrated ability to execute migration factory patterns including wave planning and rollback procedures

• Experience with VMware datacenter operations transitioning to AWS cloud operations

• Extensive hands-on experience with AWS migration tools (MGN, CloudEndure, DMS, Migration Hub)

• Working knowledge of VMware HCX for hybrid migrations and live vMotion to AWS

• Proficient in creating Infrastructure-as-Code (e.g., Terraform / AWS CloudFormation)

• Skilled in coding configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible, Chef, Puppet, etc.)

• Proficient in Python, PowerShell, and Bash scripting for migration automation

• Strong understanding of Agile project methodologies

• Ability to manage multiple clients simultaneously

• Keen attention to detail during complex migration execution

• Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving capabilities

• Experience with VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM) and disaster recovery migrations

• Knowledgeable in VMware Tanzu to AWS ECS/EKS containerization migrations

• Familiarity with AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) for SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL migrations

• Experience with compliance frameworks (PCI-DSS, HIPAA, SOC 2) in migration contexts

• Understanding of FinOps practices and AWS cost optimization with demonstrated VMware TCO improvements

• Multi-cloud experience (AWS, Azure, GCP) and comparative migration strategies

• Experience migrating SAP on VMware to SAP on AWS

• Kubernetes migration experience from VMware to AWS EKS
