This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Virginia.
• Leads the assessment and underwriting of both new and renewal business in accordance with Company underwriting standards and risk appetite.
• Designs and implements sophisticated risk assessment models to inform coverage, pricing, and terms decisions.
• Cultivates strategic partnerships with actuaries, agents, brokers, and clients.
• Acquires and analyzes motor vehicle reports, loss history reports, external inspections, and various supplementary screenings.
• Records underwriting decisions and guarantees adherence to state and federal insurance regulations.
• Assesses complex policy renewals and adjustments, identifying opportunities for policy enhancement and risk mitigation.
• Communicates underwriting strategies and decisions to internal teams, agents, and brokers.
• Tracks and shares insights on industry trends, regulatory changes, and market conditions.
• Sustains business relationships with internal and external clients and colleagues to foster new business and retain profitable accounts.
• Reviews and assesses underwriting practices while assisting with strategic modifications.
• May oversee staff performance and coaching, and participate in talent selection, development, and performance management decisions.
• Carries out other duties as assigned.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Economics, Risk Management and Insurance, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
• Typically requires a minimum of 13 years in Underwriting or a related area.
• Completion of or ongoing progress towards a professional designation is preferred, such as Associate in Underwriting (AU), Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC), Program in General Insurance (INS), Associate of Risk Management (ARM), or a marketing designation.
• Works with minimal supervision.
• Operates at the highest authority levels on the most complex assignments.
• Maintains expert knowledge of company policies and industry regulations.
• Exhibits advanced analytical, risk assessment, and problem-solving abilities.
• Possesses excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Demonstrates strong negotiation and decision-making capabilities.
• Familiarity with marketing strategies and tools is advantageous.
• Recognized as the company's subject matter expert in the field.
• May act as the highest point of escalation for decisions related to risk and coverage.
