This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Massachusetts.

📋 Description

• Assess applications with significant financial impact and complexity.

• Analyze decisions while adhering to overall underwriting policies without compromise.

• Operate independently while mentoring junior colleagues.

• Identify and offer solutions to work-related challenges and issues (e.g., workflow, systems).

• Negotiate and manage time and resources to meet deadlines and service commitments.

• Provide training and serve as an informational resource for less experienced underwriters.

• Handle all aspects of auditing, formal appeal reviews, and contestable claim assessments.

• Review applications to ensure underwriting decisions, correspondence, and administrative processes comply with established guidelines and policies.

• Audit medical record summaries to verify compliance with established documentation guidelines.

• Support management in various research initiatives related to risk assessment.

• Process formal underwriting appeals and complaints.

• Evaluate underwriting fraud referrals for appropriateness and assist management with business reviews.

• Analyze contestable claims for possible misrepresentation during the underwriting process.

• Foster positive relationships within a self-directed team setting.

• Maintain a professional demeanor and serve as a role model for junior staff.

• Oversee all aspects of the underwriting process for the most complex cases.

• Act as a subject matter expert for junior colleagues and management.


⛳️ Requirements

• College degree or equivalent business experience.

• Ideally, 7 or more years of underwriting experience or related exposure.

• In-depth understanding of the underwriting function; Familiarity with John Hancock's diverse businesses.

• Strong knowledge of referral areas.

• Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

• Robust analytical abilities; capacity to identify, investigate, and resolve issues.

• Exceptional skills in building and maintaining customer relationships.

• Ability to effectively prioritize tasks and work under deadlines while balancing service times with a customer-centric approach.

• Strong capability to understand, retain, and apply current technical information to everyday work challenges.

• Comprehensive knowledge of company plans, riders, benefits, and illustrations.

• Strong understanding of medical science, technology, and terminology, and their implications for morbidity.
