This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Arizona, +3 more states.
• Assess applications with significant financial implications and complexity.
• Analyze decisions while adhering to overall underwriting policies.
• Operate independently and mentor junior colleagues.
• Identify and propose solutions for work-related challenges and issues.
• Negotiate and manage time and resources to fulfill deadlines and service expectations.
• Deliver training and serve as an informational resource for junior underwriters.
• Conduct audits of underwritten applications to ensure compliance with established guidelines and policies.
• Review medical record summaries for documentation compliance.
• Assist management with various research initiatives related to risk assessment.
• Process formal underwriting appeals and complaints.
• Evaluate underwriting fraud referrals for appropriateness.
• Foster positive relationships within a self-directed team environment.
• Present a professional image and act as a role model for junior staff.
• Oversee all aspects of the underwriting process for the most complex cases.
• Act as a subject matter expert for junior colleagues and management.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent business experience.
• Ideally, 7 or more years of experience or exposure in underwriting.
• In-depth understanding of the underwriting function.
• Comprehensive knowledge of John Hancock's various business operations.
• Strong familiarity with referral areas.
• Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Robust analytical abilities with the capacity to define, investigate, and resolve issues.
• Exceptional capability to establish and maintain customer relationships.
• Proficient in prioritizing tasks and working effectively under deadlines while balancing published service times with a strong customer focus.
• Strong ability to understand, retain, and apply current technical information to daily work challenges.
• Extensive knowledge of company plans, riders, benefits, and illustrations.
• Solid understanding of medical science, technology, and terminology, along with their implications on morbidity.
