Senior Traffic Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Evaluate and interpret roadway and traffic design plans for highways, streets, and intersections.

• Review as-built drawings, construction plans, and traffic control plans to ensure adherence to contracts and engineering standards.

• Investigate and assess traffic conditions using traffic counts, speed analyses, accident history data, and roadway characteristics.

• Establish safe and efficient traffic volumes based on roadway geometry and operational conditions.

• Examine sight distance, roadway alignment, pavement conditions, hazards, and work zone traffic management.

• Assess traffic signal timing, phasing, maintenance, and intersection configurations for operational performance and safety implications.

• Investigate whether roadway features or traffic control elements played a role in vehicle, pedestrian, or bicycle accidents.

• Evaluate existing and proposed roadway signs, markings, and traffic control devices for compliance with established standards.

• Analyze traffic signal timing, phasing, maintenance, and intersection layout for operational effectiveness and safety impacts.

• Apply DOT standards, MUTCD guidelines, Engineering Policy Guides, and local design criteria in all evaluations.

• Draft clear technical reports and engineering opinions for forensic and litigation purposes.

• Act as a consulting and testifying expert witness, including during depositions and trial testimonies.

• Oversee multiple projects, adhering to budgets and timelines, while nurturing client relationships.

• Offer technical support to junior engineers as necessary.

• Foster business growth through continuous client engagement and repeat projects.


⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.

• Over 8 years of experience in traffic engineering, with a minimum of 4 years in forensic roles.

• Valid PE & TE licenses (TE license is required only for work in CA & OR).

• Extensive experience in traffic engineering, transportation engineering, or forensic traffic investigations.

• In-depth knowledge of highways, roadways, intersections, traffic signals, signs, and traffic control systems.

• Proven experience executing traffic engineering projects with DOTs and public agencies.

• Proficient in traffic analysis or simulation software (e.g., Traffic Sim).

• Demonstrated proficiency with the DOT’s Engineering Policy Guide (EPG).

• Strong skills in technical report writing and verbal communication.
