This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Take charge of the development, packaging, shipping, updating, and monitoring of Dispel's on-premises software.
• Manage the build and packaging pipeline for operating system images, software packages, container images, and release bundles.
• Ensure on-premises builds are reproducible and verifiable through pinned inputs, deterministic outputs, signed artifacts, and Software Bill of Materials (SBOMs).
• Create versioning and compatibility models for appliances, cloud components, and orchestration elements.
• Automate the provisioning of appliances to ensure idempotency.
• Oversee the delivery of updates, including staging, application, verification, rollback, and fleet-level release management.
• Enhance the appliance runtime by integrating local telemetry, preprocessing, buffering, store-and-forward capabilities, and local decision-making.
• Define processing approaches between edge and cloud based on bandwidth, latency, and data residency considerations.
• Manage the appliance’s resource discipline and local observability.
• Ensure the integrity of the supply chain, including managing signing keys, trust roots, and artifact provenance.
• Develop appliance-in-a-loop tests to validate upgrade, downgrade, hardware, and near-hardware paths.
• Engage in incident response and root cause analysis activities.
• Collaborate with field teams, support, customer-facing engineering, security, compliance, product management, and engineering leadership.
• Produce runbooks, upgrade notes, and architectural documentation.
• Mentor IC1 and IC2 engineers and participate in the interview process.
• Join an on-call rotation, providing after-hours troubleshooting as necessary.
• Minimum of 5 years of professional engineering experience delivering software on infrastructure not operated by the employer.
• Proven experience managing release and update processes for deployed edge, appliance, embedded, or on-premises enterprise systems.
• Extensive knowledge of Linux systems, including systemd, boot/init processes, filesystems, partitions, kernels, package lifecycle, and distribution assembly.
• Strong background in packaging and distribution using Debian/apt, OCI images, image-based or A/B updates, or similar technologies.
• Experience with artifact signing and repository management.
• Proficient in at least one programming language such as Go, Rust, Python, or C, with the ability to read code across different packaged layers.
• Comfortable utilizing coding tools like GitHub Copilot or Claude Code.
• Proficient in Infrastructure-as-Code, primarily using Ansible and Terraform.
• Experience with container runtimes and orchestration in constrained environments and data centers.
• Familiarity with Infrastructure-as-Code and CI/CD practices, including Terraform, GitHub Actions, or similar tools, for generating release artifacts.
• Solid understanding of networking fundamentals, including routing, DNS, firewalls, and VPN concepts.
• Ability to engage with cross-team stakeholders and deliver results with minimal oversight.
• Openness to accepting failure and feedback, with a willingness to learn and improve.
• Enthusiasm for acquiring new skills and understanding the work of teammates.
