This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Virginia.
• Act as the systems engineer for the engineering team, connecting hardware, firmware, and cloud components, while owning the complete system architecture and interfaces.
• Gather, break down, and sustain system requirements that encompass the embedded device, mobile applications, and cloud analytics, tracing them from customer needs to verification.
• Manage interface control documents and data contracts among firmware, mobile, backend, and data, including machine-readable, version-controlled schemas for BLE, WebSocket, and API agreements.
• Provide technical expertise regarding firmware behavior, sensor and hardware integration, power and timing constraints, networking protocols, and cloud data flow.
• Advocate for development processes such as requirements management, design reviews, configuration and change control, and verification/validation.
• Develop architecture descriptions, requirements, test plans, and decision records.
• Lead system-level verification and validation using component simulators, digital twins, and integration testing.
• Collaborate with mobile developers, firmware engineers, hardware engineers, and data scientists on interdisciplinary issues.
• Travel less than 10% for in-person events, including system testing.
• Bachelor's degree in systems, electrical, or computer engineering, computer science, or a related field.
• Over 7 years of engineering experience across hardware/firmware and software systems.
• Capability to function as a systems engineer across various disciplines, managing requirements, interfaces, and architecture for embedded hardware and cloud software products.
• Practical experience in IoT and embedded systems, including sensor integration, firmware/hardware interaction, wireless links such as BLE, constrained-network operation, and device-to-cloud data paths.
• Familiarity with embedded C, an RTOS like Zephyr, and low-power wireless SoCs such as Nordic nRF is highly advantageous.
• Strong understanding of networking protocols and interface control documents (ICDs).
• Awareness of cloud-agnostic architectures and contemporary back-end/orchestration technologies.
• Working knowledge of decentralized identity management, including zero-trust frameworks.
• Exceptional technical writing and documentation abilities.
• Experience in a start-up environment.
• Must be a U.S. Citizen and otherwise eligible to gain access to classified information and facilities.
• Must secure any necessary authorization to access restricted information and facilities protected under U.S. laws and regulations.
