This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
β’ Design and develop the Legal AI infrastructure β Create and deploy a platform of AI agents and automated workflows that substitute high-volume, templated legal tasks, including institutional client agreement redlining, SEC filing assistance, subsidiary governance processes, and commercial deal management.
β’ Manage the institutional client agreement automation system β Our top priority use case: construct an end-to-end agentic workflow that processes counterparty markups, assesses them against a structured playbook, produces a first-pass redline with comments, facilitates human review, and monitors outcomes. This operational-grade system impacts over 220 institutional clients in the pipeline.
β’ Develop a unified agent platform and governance framework β Integrate a disjointed collection of ad-hoc bots and agents into a coherent, documented, and maintainable platform with naming conventions, personas, observability, and established standards for building and deploying Legal agents.
β’ Serve as the technical thought partner to the VP and the broader Legal leadership team β Convert intricate legal workflows into engineered systems and relay engineering limitations back to non-technical stakeholders. Bridging these realms is as crucial as the engineering itself.
β’ Establish the make-vs-buy strategy β Assess and phase out third-party legal tech tools (e.g., Harvey) in favor of custom-built internal solutions, leveraging Coinbase's engineering strengths for a structural advantage.
β’ Be the case study β This position is intentionally crafted to serve as a pilot for forward-deployed engineering within non-technical sectors at Coinbase. Achieving success in this role will create the framework for how other functions (Finance, HR, Operations) can experience similar transformations.
β’ Over 12 years of backend software engineering experience, with a proven history of deploying production systems at scale.
β’ Demonstrated experience in bringing LLM-based applications to production β including evaluation frameworks, grounding, safeguards against hallucination, and human-in-the-loop design.
β’ Experience in multi-agent orchestration β you've designed and managed systems where multiple AI agents collaborate, transfer work, and escalate to humans as necessary.
β’ Outstanding ability to communicate with and learn from non-technical domain experts β while legal terminology isn't required on day one, you must quickly internalize complex workflows and translate them into engineered systems.
β’ A platform-oriented mindset β you think in terms of primitives, reusability, and standards, not merely point solutions.
β’ Fundamentals of distributed systems β the agreement automation system will involve document processing, structured playbook evaluation, routing logic, and audit trails; therefore, architecting this correctly from the start is essential.
β’ Unwavering drive to set and achieve ambitious goals in ambiguous, greenfield environments.
β’ Ability to responsibly utilize generative AI tools and copilots (e.g., LibreChat, Gemini, Glean) in daily workflows, continually learn as tools evolve, and apply human-in-the-loop practices to deliver business-ready outputs.
β’ Medical, dental, and vision coverage.
β’ 401(k) plan.
