Senior Staff Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in India.

📋 Description

• Take ownership and enhance the fundamental Search architecture, which includes indexing, retrieval, ranking, and query-time execution.

• Lead the design and implementation of significant, cross-functional search projects involving multiple teams and services.

• Drive the technical strategy for search relevance and ranking systems while balancing precision, recall, latency, and expenses.

• Collaborate with Applied Science and Machine Learning teams to implement ranking models and semantic retrieval methods into production.

• Ensure that search systems adhere to stringent latency, availability, and scalability Service Level Agreements (SLAs) under real-world traffic conditions.

• Provide mentorship to engineers through design reviews, code assessments, and technical guidance.

• Shape the roadmap and prioritization by clearly articulating technical trade-offs and long-term implications for the platform.

• Act as a technical escalation point for complicated production and architectural decisions.

• Influence the architecture and long-term development of Bloomreach’s Search platform while remaining actively involved in the details.

⛳️ Requirements

• 8–12+ years of professional software engineering experience.

• Extensive knowledge in backend and distributed systems.

• Strong practical experience in developing large-scale Search or Information Retrieval systems.

• In-depth understanding of search relevance, ranking, and query/catalog comprehension.

• Proven track record in designing and managing distributed, low-latency systems at scale.

• Proficient coding skills in Java and/or Python.

• Familiarity with cloud environments, particularly AWS or GCP, along with modern deployment platforms.

• Capability to lead technical projects across teams and influence outcomes without direct authority.

• Effective communication skills for conveying complex technical ideas and trade-offs.

• Nice-to-have: practical experience with Apache Solr, Lucene, or Elasticsearch.

• Nice-to-have: experience with vector search, embeddings, or semantic retrieval.

• Nice-to-have: understanding of search evaluation, offline metrics, and A/B testing.

• Nice-to-have: experience with big data or streaming technologies such as Spark, Kafka, or Hadoop.

• Nice-to-have: previous experience in developing enterprise-scale, customer-facing platforms.
