Senior Staff Engineer – Payments, Commerce Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in India.

📋 Description

• Design and implement multi-tenant, planet-scale commerce services for checkout, subscriptions, payment orchestration, invoicing, and tax integration.

• Take ownership of domain modeling, API and schema design, protobuf/ConnectRPC conventions, versioning, deprecation, and managing breaking changes.

• Develop resilience and availability strategies for payment processes, including retries, circuit breakers, idempotency, outbox/Saga patterns, and graceful degradation.

• Ensure auditability via double-entry ledgers, immutable event streams, trace-linked entities, tamper-evident trails, and reconciliation practices.

• Establish comprehensive end-to-end error boundaries, compensations, backfills, and automated replay mechanisms.

• Maintain service catalogs and scorecards that encompass ownership, SLOs, runbooks, PDBs, autoscaling, budgets, quotas, and timeouts.

• Set configuration standards and limits across GKE, Pub/Sub, Redis, Firestore/MongoDB, ClickHouse, and GCP.

• Create observability solutions using OpenTelemetry, RED/USE metrics, exemplars, trace sampling, SLO dashboards, and actionable alerting.

• Champion production excellence through canary/blue-green rollouts, automated rollbacks, chaos drills, disaster-recovery playbooks, multi-region failover, and incident command protocols.

• Integrate security and compliance measures, which involve PCI scope minimization, tokenization, KMS hygiene, retention, archival, and privacy controls.

• Develop developer golden paths, service templates, ADR/RFC processes, contract tests, ephemeral environments, and performance harnesses.

• Guide core domain evolution, reliability strategy, API/data governance, design reviews, postmortems, technical strategy, coding standards, mentorship, hiring, onboarding, cross-functional collaboration, risk management, and make build-vs-buy decisions.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of experience in building and operating backend systems.

• At least 5 years of experience in Go programming.

• 2–3 years of experience serving as a Staff/Principal-level individual contributor or Tech Lead for critical paths.

• Extensive knowledge of protobuf, ConnectRPC/gRPC, and API lifecycle management, including versioning, compatibility, contract testing, and Buf.

• Strong foundation in distributed systems, encompassing idempotency, deduplication/outbox, ordering, basics of consensus, backpressure, and concurrency control.

• Experience with event-driven architectures using GCP Pub/Sub and Redis for fast processing paths.

• Proficient schema design capabilities in MongoDB/Firestore and analytics/reporting methodologies on ClickHouse.

• Hands-on experience with Kubernetes/GKE operations at scale, including HPA/VPA, PDBs, resource limits/requests, multi-region architectures, CI/CD, and canary/blue-green deployments.

• Background in reliability engineering, including SLIs/SLOs, error budgets, capacity and load testing, incident management, and DR/BCP.

• Knowledge of security and compliance, including best practices for secrets/KMS, PCI fundamentals, key rotation, data retention, and archival.

• Experience in testing across various levels, including unit, integration, contract, property-based, and performance testing.

• Strong understanding of Vue.js and TanStack Query.

• Excellent technical writing and communication skills.

• Familiarity with major PSPs/local rails, active-active or multi-region designs, chaos engineering, OpenTelemetry, FinOps, PCI DSS, SOC 2/ISO 27001, or relevant privacy regulations is a plus.
