• Establish the long-term data engineering strategy that aligns with the company's priorities and adheres to engineering best practices.
• Create cohesive architectures across various pipelines and API boundaries.
• Streamline infrastructure to minimize maintenance expenses.
• Make significant decisions regarding build-versus-buy and framework selection.
• Evaluate designs to pinpoint and mitigate technical risks.
• Enhance developer productivity and implement quality practices across engineering.
• Deploy major features and systems equipped with monitoring, failure-domain characterization, and success metrics.
• Identify organization-wide opportunities that align with the business strategy.
• Redirect team efforts when projects deviate or fail to generate business impact.
• Ensure the protection of PII/PHI, security, compliance, data governance, and data quality principles.
• Influence the roadmaps of other teams and spearhead cross-functional decision-making.
• Provide mentorship and coaching to engineers.
• Communicate technical strategies and business cases to executive leadership.
• Eliminate silos and promote the adoption of new technologies and processes.
• A minimum of 8 years of professional experience in data engineering with an advanced degree, or over 12 years with a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
• Experience in start-ups and the healthcare sector is highly valued.
• Expertise in data modeling concepts, database design principles, and data warehouse technologies such as Snowflake through production-grade implementations.
• Proficient in PySpark, SQL, and Python.
• Practical experience with ETL tools and frameworks including Apache Spark, Apache Airflow, dbt, Looker, and Superset.
• Extensive experience managing the complete data lifecycle.
• Direct involvement in developing, implementing, and releasing complex data processing solutions utilizing distributed systems.
• Familiarity with modern object-oriented or compiled programming languages such as C#, C++, Go, Java, or Scala is an advantage.
• A proven history of making engineering decisions organization-wide in uncertain environments.
