Senior Software Engineer – Vector Search, Elasticsearch

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Switzerland.

📋 Description

• Spearhead initiatives within Elasticsearch to create a top-tier search engine characterized by speed and relevance.

• Develop new search functionalities and address bugs in Elasticsearch.

• Enhance code clarity and, at times, invent or implement new algorithms and data structures.

• Collaborate closely with the operating system and hardware when necessary.

• Work alongside a globally distributed team dedicated to enhancing Elasticsearch's vector search capabilities.

• Identify and promote enhancements in Elasticsearch's search relevance.

• Engage with global community members regarding issues and pull requests, managing, transferring, or resolving them as needed.

• Write idiomatic, modern Java code.

• Contribute to the technical strategy and vision for search functionalities, which includes designing and implementing features and improvements.

⛳️ Requirements

• Experience in implementing innovative techniques in vector similarity on a search platform with a substantial user base or advancing academic research in vector similarity information retrieval.

• Professional background in search or vector databases.

• Familiarity with HNSW, IVF, or other pertinent algorithms and libraries on large-scale search platforms.

• Strong core Java competencies, encompassing the standard library, data structures, concurrency constructs, and lambdas.

• Capability to work independently and guide projects from inception to completion, which includes technical design and collaboration with other engineers on component development.

• Experience in collaborative development, conducting code and API reviews, and engaging in asynchronous internet teamwork.

• Proficient with data storage technologies such as Elasticsearch, Solr, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or Cassandra.

• Demonstrated success in utilizing AI to expedite development, troubleshoot complex systems, and optimize code while taking responsibility for final outcomes.

• Ability to collaborate across functions and teams, and switch between projects, codebases, or teams seamlessly.

• Proven ability to influence decisions and achieve results in a distributed team through asynchronous, direct, and transparent communication.

• An export license may be necessary as a condition of employment for individuals located in or nationals of Belarus, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria, or Russia, including specified annexed Ukrainian territories.
