Senior Software Engineer – Vector Search, Elasticsearch

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Portugal.

📋 Description

• Contribute to the strategic direction and vision for Elasticsearch search functionalities

• Design and implement innovative search features and enhancements

• Troubleshoot bugs and enhance code clarity

• Lead initiatives within Elasticsearch to enhance speed and relevance in search

• Develop new search features and create algorithms or data structures

• Collaborate closely with the operating system and hardware as necessary

• Work alongside a globally distributed team focused on vector search capabilities

• Identify and promote improvements in Elasticsearch search relevance

• Engage with global community members on issues and pull requests, including triage and resolution

• Write modern, idiomatic Java code

⛳️ Requirements

• Implemented innovative techniques in vector similarity on a search platform with a significant user base or advanced academic research in vector similarity information retrieval

• Professional experience with search or vector databases

• Utilized HNSW, IVF, or other relevant algorithms and libraries on search platforms at scale

• Strong skills in core Java, encompassing standard library data structures, concurrency constructs, and lambdas

• Capability to manage projects from inception to completion, including technical design and collaboration with other engineers

• Experience in remote collaboration, including asynchronous teamwork

• Familiarity with data storage technologies such as Elasticsearch, Solr, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or Cassandra

• Proven experience leveraging AI to expedite development, debug complex systems, and optimize code while taking ownership of final outcomes

• Ability to collaborate across functions and teams, transitioning between projects, codebases, or teams based on business priorities

• Skill in driving decisions and results within a distributed team using asynchronous, direct, and transparent communication
