Senior Software Engineer, Onboarding

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Massachusetts.

📋 Description

• Develop and create AI agents that facilitate the onboarding process for restaurants, encompassing tool design, permissions management, evaluation, safety measures, and oversight of production.

• Transform Toast's onboarding systems—including payments, payroll, hardware, menus, and appointments—into dependable agent tools capable of assessing states and executing actions.

• Take ownership of and refine the onboarding backend to accommodate unpredictable flows driven by agents.

• Establish evaluation and measurement metrics related to setup quality, readiness for launch, and support requirements post-launch.

• Implement full-stack updates in the restaurant-facing setup experience as necessary.

• Collaborate with product teams, design, onboarding operations, and data science to convert onboarding challenges into quantifiable agents and product enhancements.

• Participate in the technical design and architecture, setting engineering standards for AI-driven systems.

• Guide engineers through code reviews, collaborative work, and sharing best practices in AI development.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of software engineering experience in building and managing production backend systems using Kotlin, Java, or another object-oriented programming language.

• Background in developing on LLMs where models perform real actions via tools, either in production settings or substantial side projects.

• Solid understanding of nondeterminism, evaluation processes, and associated costs.

• Demonstrated ability to take ownership of outcomes from start to finish: design, launch, monitoring of rollout, measurement, and iteration.

• Product-oriented mindset with the capability to collaborate across product management, design, and operational teams.

• Experience utilizing AI coding tools like Claude Code as an integral part of the development process.

• Proven track record of assisting others in enhancing their skills with AI coding tools.

• Preferred: background in customer onboarding, activation, growth, or workflow/task orchestration.

• Preferred: experience with experimentation or funnel analysis.

• Preferred: full-stack development experience; knowledge of React and TypeScript is a plus.

• Preferred: familiarity with event-driven architecture.
