Senior Software Engineer – New Markets, Japan (JLPT N1 Fluent)

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Japan.

📋 Description

• Create highly scalable and mission-critical brokerage systems tailored for the Japanese market.

• Develop and improve middle- and back-office systems, including gRPC microservices, REST and gRPC APIs, as well as integrations with Japan-specific third-party vendors.

• Collaborate with core teams to refine the framework for various languages, currencies, and markets, incorporating Japan-specific requirements like NISA, MyNumber, withholding tax, and JP-GAAP accounting.

• Work alongside regional tech leads via Slack and meetings to ensure alignment with global teams.

• Liaise in Japanese with local regulators, vendors, partners, and business stakeholders, translating requirements into technical specifications.

• Diagnose incidents and resolve reported bugs effectively.

• Take part in on-call rotations to address production issues during Japan's business hours.

• Engage in regional recruitment, cross-functional projects, mentoring, and promoting the Alpaca culture in Japan.

• Contribute to operational reliability engineering during regional business hours to maintain proactive 24x7 platform stability.

⛳️ Requirements

• Native or JLPT N1 level proficiency in Japanese, capable of reading, writing, and communicating professionally with local regulators, vendors, and partners.

• Fluency in business-level English, enabling effective collaboration in English-only team meetings, design discussions, code reviews, and written documentation.

• Demonstrated experience in designing and developing complex financial systems, ideally including double-entry accounting.

• Strong grasp of accounting principles, ledger structures, and transaction reconciliation.

• Experience in creating scalable, high-availability financial applications that manage multi-currency transactions.

• Familiarity with regulatory compliance requirements in financial markets, with experience in Japan being preferred.

• Proficiency in at least one statically typed programming language, such as Go, Rust, Java, Kotlin, C#, Scala, or C++.

• Experience with financial APIs, market data integrations, and trade settlement processes.

• Solid computer science fundamentals and proven experience in software engineering architecture.

• Ability to work independently within a fully remote, globally distributed team and thrive under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

• Experience with domain-driven design and event-driven design principles.

• Capability to lead and troubleshoot incidents or bugs during Japan's business hours.
